Just this week walking to the car my daughter stopped to speak to her friend who was sitting outside a cafe having a coffee. As we were about to walk on GD all 2yrs 8 months loudly told daughter's friend, "you say hello to my Mama." The friend had earlier waved to me as I was standing further along the footpath. Nice to know GD is looking out for me.

Ha Galen I feel for you. In our thirties we were taking our widowed mothers away, Greece, Italy,USA . We are still paying. And the DD are nearing 40

ninathenana - my youngest granddaughter, when she first got paid from her place of work, rang me up and said 'nanny, shall we go for a Costa Coffee - I'm working now so I can pay'. She knows I love Costa Coffee and I thought this was her way of saying thank you for all the times I've taken her and her sister out for lunch, dinner, ice creams, etc etc. We ordered our drinks and I stood aside thinking how grown up she will feel paying for my coffee and her ice cold thing. She said 'you go ahead nanny, as I've said, I'm working now and I can pay for my own'

She obviously shares my brother's mantra: nobody gets rich by spending it!

My DGS is 6 this year, I cannot wait for the time he does something similar. Mind you he is very mindful of his dear old Grandma (I'm not quite 60) - when I popped into the garage to see what he and my OH were doing, he leapt to my side and said 'stand back Grandma, this is dangerous' (OH was cutting up side old cardboard boxes). A silly memory I really cherish.

He has obviously been saving it for a very special, grown-up occasion!

You never forget the first time your children treat you, do you. 19 yr-old DS buys me ice creams when we are out on our own, because he knows DBH disapproves of them!
