Since hearing Beautiful South's rendition of it last week I've decided that Islands in the Stream is one of my favourite love songs:

What's yours? Be as soppy as you like it smile

Jeff Lynne's version of September Song - although I don't think Nat King Cole's can ever be beaten.

Agus, I think 'She' defines love - I love you as you are

I remember receiving those! How funny, I had forgotten. Then I would dump them for their appalling taste in music. grin

DH made one for me when we had just started going out. One track was Van Morrison - Brown Eyed Girl for obvious reasons. At that point I was living in the Nurses Home during my training and friends on my floor would eventually shout "will you turn that bloody music down Agus" grin

Oh the 'mixed cassette tape. What do young people do now without them? It was so poignant the way that prospective suitors would deliver them to our house for my daughter to listen to; almost something Jane Austen'ish about them.

I spent much of my yoof in France, and this was the constant backdrop to many an ill-fated romance. Ne me quitte pas, by Jacques Brel. I don't think any other love song comes anywhere near it for passion and emotion.

"September Song" by Nat King Cole.
It brings tears to my eyes every time.

Some great songs there. But the one which reduces me to a quivering, sobbing wreck is "Everything I do, I do it for you" sung by Bryan Adams.
This song played a huge part in my big romance and I can't hear it without going right back there into all that emotion, drama, passion, soaring heights, desperate lows, love, hate, jealousy.
Gosh. How did I ever endure all that?????

(I too love Charles Aznavour. - She. also - Yesterday when I was young.
Don't care who slates us for loving him... Each to his own).

Oh Merlot! That hit the spot

Harri that was my Father's favourite song so I can't help but love it too.

Anyone else in a mess yet? My eyes seem to be a little moist at the moment.

My husband made me a "mixed cassette tape" with this song when we had just met and it took my mother to tell me "Er, I think that's meant as a message for you". Still melts my heart:

(Steve Forbert - I'm in Love With You).

Beautiful piano playing also melts my heart.

Another close favourite. My Love Is Like A Red, Red Rose

And I will love thee still my dear
'til all the seas gang dry

Autumn leaves by Nat King Cole.

janeainsworth Sat 12-Jul-14 11:10:52

That's lovely, Merlot. I've always liked ELO but not heard that one before.

merlotgran Sat 12-Jul-14 11:08:09

Does anyone else love Jeff Lynne's version of 'She'?

HollyDaze Sat 12-Jul-14 11:05:06

Same as Gagagran - I really like that song.

Tegan Sat 12-Jul-14 11:01:20

Grannyknot; it cheered me up somewhat, with my own marriage falling apart, that someone can write a song about someone in that way only for that relationship to not last. But just imagine someone writing about you like that. wow!!

merlotgran Sat 12-Jul-14 11:00:05

Something - George Harrison, Just The Way You Are - Billy Joel, Days Like These - Matt Monro.

Grannyknot Sat 12-Jul-14 10:59:15

No slating allowed on here! [stern face]

It's all about love grin

Agus Sat 12-Jul-14 10:53:35

Ae Fond Kiss. The latest version I have heard is sung by Eddi Reader. Beautiful words.

Good to hear of another Charles Aznavour, She fan Annie. We were slated on another song thread recently grin

Grannyknot Sat 12-Jul-14 10:50:32

What a treat, Tegan. I never knew that about the song.

Sarah; Bob Dylan [Sad Eyed Lady of the Lowlands]. At least I think it's a love song, even though they're no longer together.

Anniebach Sat 12-Jul-14 10:30:14

'Evergreen'. Babara Striesand. 'She' Charles Aznavour

kittylester Sat 12-Jul-14 10:24:45

Yep, nonnie you are right!

Gagagran Sat 12-Jul-14 10:21:53

Shania Twain's "Still the one" is my favourite.
