when did you marry&what was your dress like?

Done!

Married 1967 in a long, straight white velvet dress with long close fitting sleeves. Three bridesmaids in ice blue velvet.

Married 1970 in a Midi length peasant style dress from Bus Stop in Kensington. It was white muslin with blue dots printed all over it. The bodice laced up the front and had blue embroidery. It was high waisted and had long, full sleeves. I wore it with a wide brimmed white straw hat and white tights and patent shoes. I think the dress cost £8 - about 50p less than my wedding ring

I wore a floaty type dress of dirty pink net stuff with pale cream lace bodice. It was gorgeous. I think I got it in John Lewis (1975). Destroyed by the kids in dressing up at playtime. And my husband wore a brown velvet suit that was very fashionable at the time. We thought we looked very zooty.

1968
At St Pancras Town Hall with 6 guests and no family and I was 18. I wore a home made mini dress. It was white cotton 'fake' Broderie Anglais. I still have it at the bottom of a drawer. My tights were falling down and the registrar messed up the vows. No reception and no honeymoon. Still together.

1962
Oyster duchess satin, long-sleeved, plain, full-length. Dressmaker-made. It had a train attached like a belt, which could be removed. Frothy veil with one white rose.Bunch of roses. 3 Bridesmaids - two in turquoise duchess satin short full-skirted dresses and little one in turquoise organza sort of material. They had rose headpieces, in turquoise.
Had my dress cut down and I dyed it coffee-coloured for my husband's workplace Dinner dance. Don't know what happened to it next. What DID we do with cast-off clothing then? There weren't any Charity shops.....

Humbertbear we got married in St Pancras Town Hall too! The registrar was fine but DH was not! He'd been out with his dad the night before (Safe enough you'd think!) and got paralytic on Ouzo and Greek Brandy. He was in such a state at the wedding that he's always maintained that we were never legally married - still together though

Our registrar leaned over the desk after the "ceremony", shook hands with us, and said "Congratulations, that`ll be seven and sixpence please!"

Gagagran I can beat you by 1 year we just celebrated 50th Wedding Anniversary last week (20 June 1964) and I wore a very traditional wedding dress of the time white organza with panel of lace down the front and high neck lace trim long sleeve which as someone else said ended in a v on top of my hand it had a short train, I wore a full length veil which I loved I will be honest and say that my DM was a woman on a mission and the dress had to be bought in one day I liked it well enough but stuck out for full length veil and carried a white bible - where did all that religious fervor go - anyway pics were posted last week on FB by DD and were well received.

I was married at Christmas in 1970. I wore a long plain empire line satin dress with integral train and a high neck. The long bell sleeves were trimmed with marabou to match the circlet I made to hold my long veil. I was thrilled with this dress which was made by a talented colleague when I was teaching. DH nearly didn't make the wedding because of the snow! The police told him to go back - he was crossing the Pennines - but he was determined and slipped and slithered his way to what will be 44 years together! People said it wouldn't last!!!

I bought mine at John Lewis in Oxford Street one working lunchtime in Feb 1970 [ that sounds so casual doesn't it, as opposed to all the soul searching that goes on now in choosing a dress.] I was by myself as well, gobbled a lunchtime sandwich and then ran into JL to choose a dress in about half an hour.We married in May and the daisy dress looked perfect.

1969 at Stockport register office. My dress was a mini that just covered my knickers, but it did have a high neck and long sleeves. It was in white lace, with coloured velvet ribbons round the hem and cuffs. I wore white patent shoes with square toes and a high heel. My hair was very short, cut like Twiggy's. I did have good legs in those days - deep sigh.

there is way too much fuss about weddings now IMHO.

1st Time, 1978, aged 18 ( just ) in Church - Edwardian Style white dress, high neck, frilled bodice , juliet cap and veil, white ankle strap stilletos little bridesmaids in lilac floral frocks with broderie anglais pinafores and posy balls,best friend in lilac floral edwardian dress, ring from samuels, with hearts engraved in it, him in pinstripes, reception, sit down in hotel ... DV started a week later...

2nd Time 1989-was going to wear borrowed green laura ashley, but everyone decided on my hen night that green was unlucky, so borrowed my neighbours daughters outfit - white knee length dress with spaghetti straps, and crop jacket - she was divorced so not sure how that was any luckier! borrowed my Sil's shoes, hair in french plait with gypsophioia ( ? ) , bouquet - flowers from the garden, rings from argos, no bridesmaids, just our kids milling about ! Reception - bring and share buffet at home ..... still going strong and very happy

First time I made a blue cotton dress sprigged with small white flowers (early Laura Ashley type print). Tatted lace (also made by me) attached around the neckline, and a white cotton crocheted shawl (also made).

Second time a summer skirt (also blue and white as it happens and a white cotton blouse, both of which I'd had for a decade or so. I'd worn the skirt when riding about on my motorbike in Thailand too. And a blue linen jacket. I still have that skirt and I still wear it on the odd occasions that it's warm enough up here.

Can't remember what I wore on my feet, but the second time it would have been shoes suitable to go punting in because that's what we did in the afternoon. Mind you, I may have taken my shoes off for the punting. I was good enough at it by then not to need to tuck my skirt into my knickers.

Talking of punting, who else has watched racing punts? Awesome.

You are so right roses when my daughter got married 17 years ago she found a lovely ballerina length (remember them?) cream dress in Monsoon for £90. The local florist made up a bouquet of red roses with a matching clip for her hair and I think the groom may have bought a new suit. I made and decorated the cake and my son and I did the food for the reception. The night club where they had evening jobs let them have a room for nothing and decorated it with jars of daffodils. We all walked from the church to the reception with a big basket of flowers and everyone had a great time!

Not only was it great value but it was all organised in 8 weeks after she suddenly decided to get married! AND they are still together! I really believe the saying that the length of a marriage is in inverse proportion to the cost of it.

1971 and my mother made me a dress in white crimplene covered in rose indentations, she put fur around the sleeves. She thought I was going to wear a coat over it so wasn't too worried about whether it was okay. I waited until the morning and told her the dress was so pretty I wanted to show it off without the coat. Oh boy did she panic but I got my way .

the shoes also have a story. I have big feet and ordered shoes by post from my catalogue to get the right size. There was a big postal strike and we didn't know whether they would arrive. I contacted the Daily Mail to see if they could help and they were going to make a big issue of it. Sadly the shoes arrived a week or two before 'the' day.

Exactly Deedaa.One of our DD's got married about 10 years ago, and we went to a big wedding shop, where my DD told the assistant she didn't want to spend much, we found a dress marked down no less than 4 times because the assistant said it was beautiful but not the fashion [ an ivory sweetheart necked, with short sleeves, big bow worn on the small of the back, very Victorian and uttlerly gorgeous.] A bit on the big side as it was a 12 and she was a 10, but I knew somebody who was an excellent seamstress , so not a problem.She found a lovely veil to go with it and a pearl and ivy headband to complete the Victorian look.These were marked down also. The dress was pure silk with many under layers and was now just £100.The look at that time [maybe still is] the tube type[ strapless] which she hated anyway.You have to be firm at these shops, because they will try and get you to spend, but in the end, the assistant got into the spirit of it all. We used a local lady who was good with flowers to do all the flowers, including bridal bouquet and buttonholes for all the guests.
We had pro caterers, this was the main cost, but that was a choice, we could have done it ourselves if needed.

We still have the receipt for our own wedding reception[from 1970] which came to £52 [for 47 people.]We only had a small family each, so was relieved that it didn't cost more.

1971 - white hospital theatre gown and drip. A long story!

1968 Blimey Galen my dress sounded exactly the same I also had Honiton lace for the veil. It was from a Vogue pattern, someone - a friend of the family made it.
