Rushed in again to answer a call and it was that wine company, which I cancelled a few months ago (you know the one!). However, after reading this thread I may re-order some . Exhausting!

I get a nice letter or postcard about twice a week every week from Sky - cancelled over 12 months ago - what a waste of paper. Have sent them back with a message to take me off their list, now ignore them. They must be desperate or have nothing better to do. What a waste of paper and postage.

We traditionalists prefer to adhere to the original (Greek) * -ize* spelling, and not join the trendy, Gadarene with their affected (French) -ise spelling.
Here is the OED on the subject:
Concerning the suffix itself, whatever the element to which it is added, is in its origin the Gr. -ιζειν, L. -izāre; and, as the pronunciation is also with z, there is no reason why in English the special French spelling should be followed, in opposition to that which is at once etymological and phonetic.
In this Dictionary the termination is uniformly written -ize.

It is clear that it has always been "accepted practice" in British English to spell such words as -ize, and
if there is any "pedantic" argument to be made, it would be one that accords with the OED and that would say that to spell the words in the French style as -ise should not really be considered correct even in British English!

If you stuck to the -ize form, then practise would become practize. However, this is surely a topic for pedants' corner.

I started this thread as a mild rant about a phone call - I know threads move on but honestly!

Tried to get it back on track

Someone I know lets it always go to answerphone and only answers those calls they want to - expensive but could be worth it!

My one thought is that I might enjoy putting such callers in touch with a certain poster and just let them get on with it.

It was HappyMan's use of 'ill advized' which caught my eye - never come across that before!

Is it American spellings? They use a lot of "zeds2 where we put S. I had to fiddle my computer on to UK English to stop these dratted z spellings.

rosequartz I am still getting post for DD from the PDSA. It is forwarded from an address they left about 10 years ago and comes to me in spite of the fact that they haven't lived with us for 9 years! She has written to them many times to tell them about the change of address but still it comes!

I make no apology for referring AAA to the Shorter Oxford Dictionary, which specifies the z spelling but then quotes Defoe and Swift using the s spelling. If it is good enough for them it's good enough for anyone else.
