Just wondering how many of you use the site? What are your likes and dislikes about it?

rubysong Sun 07-Feb-16 16:15:36

I use it quite a bit but only have close 'friends' and ignore other requests. It's nice to see what people are doing but I don't like all the 'see if I can get a thousand likes' type posts and never respond. I just don't see the point of them. I have DS1 on fb but not DS2 as he has too many friends and I don't want to get involved with all of them, it takes me long enough as it is.

I have a Facebook account but don't use it now. I started it in an effort to find an old friend, but that didn't happen, so I lost interest. The only time I go on there now is just to keep up with my favourite fishery, but I don't post, I just read. I should close my account really. I'm fed up of receiving emails telling me I 'have more friends on Facebook than I realise'. No I don't - just total strangers I'm not interested in!

Alea you are wrong! I post if I'm feeling down

grannylyn65 Sun 07-Feb-16 15:00:56

Alea, are you ok?

Willow500 Sun 07-Feb-16 14:51:09

Alea you have summed it up perfectly - exactly how I feel about it - love it and hate it too!

Badenkate Sun 07-Feb-16 10:34:02

I agree with you Daddima - not that you're a grumpy old woman, but the 'warning' postings. You only have to do a quick check on google to find out that these are almost all hoaxes.

Daddima Sun 07-Feb-16 10:17:27

I like it for keeping an eye on what folk are up to! I also keep quite a lot of photographs on it, as I previously lost a lot of pics when my laptop died.

I do get irritated by people posting warnings about people waiting to rob you/ murder you/ steal your car/steal your child, or your dog. A quick Google usually shows these to be hoaxes, as are the ones promising free iphones etc.

( I really am a grumpy old woman)

Facebook is SUCH a mixed "blessing" (?)
If you believe what you see, everybody except you is having a wonderful time, exotic holidays, meals out (or delicious morsels prepared by a partner or paragon child) getting a new car, puppy, or child/grandchild.
I would add it can be isolating in itself. If nobody "likes" a comment you have made, you can feel ignored and spurned even by your nearest and dearest. It frequently relays too much information and leads to people feeling sidelined or plain left out.
Been there, shed the tears.
On the other hand it can span thousands of miles, keeping you in touch with people that you might not otherwise be in contact with, can give the odd laugh and if like me you are partial to cute kitten or dog videos it can be great.
Just remind yourself, nobody posts on Facebook that they are lonely, bored, can't afford to put the heating on and only have toast for tea. Nobody posts that they have not spoken to a living soul in a week or that their joints ache so much they can barely drag themselves down the garden.
Maybe if we did, someone out there might recognise a cry for help.

seacliff Sun 07-Feb-16 10:04:58

KateK I sympathise re. feeling a bit left out at times, you obviously did the right thing for you in coming off it.

I sometimes feel as though I have a really boring life compared to some old but now distant friends, who are always out and about having fun, and putting photos on every time. We don't go out so much as I'd like, and I do feel dissatisfied at times. However I stay on FB, as I have 2 sons away, and some good friends in Australia, and like to see their occasional photos/comments.

Badenkate, I didn't think of looking for Archers sites, must have a search, I am now into that, and waiting for Rob to get his come uppance.

I too ignore most rather random friend requests, I don't want too many people seeing my private life.

Imperfect27 Sun 07-Feb-16 09:28:24

I use FB, but sparingly.

I love it for keeping up with close family and friends. The instant message system is also really handy and we have established a family group - fun for exchanging things that interest and entertain us.

I tell my children it is a great way to stalk them smile smile. I have found that they use it differently as they grow older - once it seemed very important in their lives and every detail down to what they ate was on display there for anyone to see, but they have all grown away from it. Ooooh - perhaps it is because I am stalking them ha ha ha!

Badenkate Sun 07-Feb-16 08:32:57

I generally enjoy Facebook. I have family in Australia who regularly post what they're doing or where they are with photos, so I can keep up with them. One of my son goes on Facebook fairly often with comments or quirky things and he does a lot of driving around the country, so when he's off somewhere and I see a comment from him, I know he's got there safely and I can stop worrying ( and he won't know I've been worrying)- they're always our children ? . I'm also on a couple of Archer's pages, and I love the humour on there but also the support and that nobody takes offence at light-hearted comments.

Falconbird Sun 07-Feb-16 06:46:00

I like Facebook. I have a large number of first cousins who are now getting very elderly, but I have contacted second cousins who are 20 years younger than me and I enjoy keeping in touch with them. Without Fb this would never have happened.

I like the funny or inspirational posts and share some of them.

I am amazed at how many friends some people have and wonder how they can keep up with them.

Willow500 Sun 07-Feb-16 06:30:14

I'm on it and have actually found several distant relatives I didn't know about and have recently found my best friend from primary school. My eldest son and his family are all on as well as other cousins and friends so it's good to share photos and music and see what's happening with them. Sadly my youngest son in NZ hates social media so won't use it and although his wife has an account rarely posts so I never get to see anything from them. I belong to two groups from my childhood towns and love seeing the old photos that are posted from there - very nostalgic. I do hate the awful photos though - one cousin in particular shares horrendous animal cruelty stuff which I quickly scroll past. Yesterday I updated my close friends list and was inundated with pointless posts so am going back in to use that button!! Since finding GN though I find I'm not constantly looking at it only to be disappointed no one has spoken to me which is a good thing smile

I love it. I keep it for real friends and family and it is a simple way to keep in touch and share photos. I have a very small number and never see all the things that people moan about. If you are seeing things that you don't like then they are not real friends. I don't get adverts.
I keep Twitter for interacting with strangers.

I am addicted to social media networking websites especially Face book.I have more than 1000 friends on face book and always love to make new friends & interact with them.It is one of the best & easiest platform to use today for all types of age groups. For business owners,It becomes easier to make new customers and to get reviews about their products/services.

Laura85 Thu 05-Jun-14 00:26:29

I to don't have very many friends on there I've kept it for close friends and family only. I hate the horrible pictures that people put on, I don't see why Facebook don't do anything about them. I report them but just get the same reply "it hasn't broken any rules"
There a few great little groups on there to. I found one that had lot of good little deals on things I can buy the grand children as little treats.

janerowena Wed 04-Jun-14 23:32:08

I was just about to mention the little arrow, it is very useful. Otherwise my 'Home' page just today would have had a skeletal dog, football logos, whale-killing, a singing guinea pig and yet another photo of my friend's whippet sitting in front of the fire doing nothing. But that's only a small part - there was also a photo of my GS and one of an old friend who now lives in Munich, a friend who lives in Thailand managed to renew his visa ok and he had been very worried because he thought the coup would affect him, and the inlaws spent the night on the Queen Mary. I get far more news from friends and family than I ever did before facebook.

Marelli Wed 04-Jun-14 20:12:47

GrandmaSandra, I'll give that a try. Thank you.

Agus Wed 04-Jun-14 20:09:31

Sorry Yogagran I have just now read your post. Thank you for the advice.

I was trying to cook, read and post at the same time and missed your post smile

GrandmaSandra Wed 04-Jun-14 19:58:34

Marelli, yes, I think you can hide posts by friends without losing other posts by said friends. Some of the younger members of the family (who I have accepted as "friends" so as not to cause upset!) sometimes post things I'd rather not see so I've clicked on the little button in the corner and hidden the "offending" posts.

I use FB to keep in touch with people. There are quite a few old friend/colleagues with whom I don't have a lot of contact, and we just keep in touch with what each other is doing via FB. It's a nice way to have contact with people if used as it is meant to be used. It's also a good method of seeing all the lovely photos that are taken of my grandchildren.

merlotgran Wed 04-Jun-14 19:47:43

Thanks to facebook I feel close to all my family and friends no matter how far away they are.

Marelli Wed 04-Jun-14 19:41:47

Sorry yogagran, I meant to say thank you for your advice. smile

Marelli Wed 04-Jun-14 19:40:58

Sometimes though, a well-meaning 'friend' will share a post regarding a suffering elephant/bear/dog, etc...... I wouldn't be able to hide those posts, would I? hmm In saying that, though, I don't suppose it would make much difference if they weren't on my list of 'friends'. I'll give it a try and see what happens.

Agus Wed 04-Jun-14 19:23:24

I am inundated with posts from Scottish SPCA Marelli it's heartbreaking and although a phone number is supplied I have, to date, had no joy getting through to them..

I have 3 friends on FB which I joined recently sad. Through choice though. Both DDs DD2 lives in Australia and her friend who has returned home to Australia.
