My wife and I are devastated by the box-ticking dismissal of Richard Ingrams. We were given our first subscription to the Oldie as a Christmas present from our daughter and it has been renewed for the past 4 years. It is an ongoing joy throughout the year. Who is going to be able to fill the shoes of such a witty, incisive and literate editor. It sounds like a poisoned chalice in more ways than one.

jinglbellsfrocks Mon 02-Jun-14 09:08:46

Well yes! Just the thing for it. Sales would shoot up. grin

AlieOxon Mon 02-Jun-14 08:27:08

But he could certainly give it some spice!

jinglbellsfrocks Sun 01-Jun-14 22:40:27

I don't think Ian Hislop would touch it with a barge pole! Not his thing at all.

janeainsworth Sun 01-Jun-14 22:31:12

MrA, DD2 and DSiL and I were discussing that question over dinner Elegran.
We think Ian Hislop is perhaps the man for the job, especially as he was Richard Ingrams' successor at Private Eye.
DD suggested someone from Viz could do the PE job grin

Elegran Sun 01-Jun-14 16:56:39

I think the name is meant as a joke, Agus, but the impression it gives is definitely of a cosy mag for the decrepit, which it could hardly be under Richard Ingram. I wonder who will take over?

I subscribed for a while. It is funny in parts, in a rather consciously intelligentsia kind of way. Some of the contributors are good - Kate Sawyer on the Whiteboard Jungle, Virginia Ironside reporting from the Granny Annexe. Wilfrid De'ath is not to my taste.

(Praising with faint damns?)

AlieOxon Sun 01-Jun-14 16:15:49

Actually I find the 'Oldie' more readable than most, at the doctors.....

Agus Sun 01-Jun-14 15:42:26

Snap Ariadne ! terrible name and I thought it would be akin to People's Friend (something I have never read either) but I do like Richard Ingram. Never heard of the Pembroke bloke but, if he has been nasty to Richard, I don't like him!

annodomini Sun 01-Jun-14 13:19:26

That must be a satisfying revenge, when.

Richard Ingrams' article in the Mail on Sunday is funny. Makes the boss look like a right plonker grin

jinglbellsfrocks Sun 01-Jun-14 13:03:06

I think it could be rather outdated tbh.

annodomini Sun 01-Jun-14 12:38:06

Such an insult, summoning the founding editor to a disciplinary. Constructive dismissal?

ffinnochio Sun 01-Jun-14 12:07:09

We were given a subscription to "The Oldie" this Christmas. We both found it dire, so I take them along to the local library, where people can help themselves to all kinds of magazines. They are always taken, so I'm glad it's being enjoyed. smile

HollyDaze Sun 01-Jun-14 11:43:44

I've never heard of it (or the two men) either - maybe a spot of advertising would help their sales.

Ariadne Sun 01-Jun-14 11:11:44

Never heard of "The Oldie" until it popped up on here occasionally. The name alone.....

johnduerden Sun 01-Jun-14 09:38:09

This is very regrettable, I'm cancelling my subscription forthwith. I've taken and loved The Oldie since issue one. This so-called 'disciplinary' is an outrage. A pox upon this Pembroke bloke.

janeainsworth Sat 31-May-14 23:11:54

Richard Ingrams always seems to me to write so incisively and to see things from a different perspective from everyone else.
Private Eye went where other journalists feared to tread, too.

janerowena Sat 31-May-14 23:07:46

How sad. It's one of those things that should go on for ever. An institution.

Soutra Sat 31-May-14 22:50:26

"sussed"!!

Soutra Sat 31-May-14 22:49:29

Oh for goodness sake silverfish if you haven't sudsed whst the Oldie is or Richard Ingrams is why not just leave it and get back to whatever fun thing you were doing.
