As to the deodorant under the arms - I found if I was very liberal with washing up liquid on the affecting part and washed on a higher temp all was well. I now use a block of soap I get here. Le Chat- similar to the Sunlight block my mother used and I rub that under the SMS each time I wash a shirt.
I think some deodorants are worse than others for staining and making the fabric go stiff.

phoenix None of this stuff really compares to the satisfaction of being able to pay your bills.

The house will appear to be very empty when you come home from work this evening. On the plus side you can do whatever you like.

I don't know how I missed the fact that you have a job at last phoenix - that's great, and it sounds as if it is going well too. Well done!
The working away for Mr P is a pain, I know, we have done it off and on for 40 years, including the getting up at crack of sparrers to head off. You'll get back into that routine soon too, but extra shirts definitely the way to go. (When I was the one working away, I tried taking the ironing away with me occasionally so I didn't have to do it at the weekend. Didn't work, the light was too bad or the room too small though).

Charleygirl he will be setting off in the morning (he always does that, would rather get up very early than go the night before!), but his shirts are ironed and on hangers under a plastic cover thing so that they don't get crumpled in the case.

He has a good supply of clean underwear (just in case of bus related incidents), his shoes are polished and everything all ready for the morning!

His alarm is set for 3.30, mine for 7.15 but no doubt I will get up and do some token blundering about before he sets off. Then of course I will go back to bed, which is where I'm off to now.

phoenix a big wave to Mr P as he will be on his travels this evening to the B& B so that he is bright as a button tomorrow to start the new job. Hopefully it is not far from his place of work. Digby and Maurice will miss him but give them more space on the bed.

phoenix I do not think that it is possible to get rid of deodorant/perspiration stains on shirts. As others have said, when the coffers are healthier, slowly replace them.

It is a long time since I heard but never forgot "you'll wonder where the yellow went when you wash your teeth wih Pepsodent".

I like that sentiment Purple. When my MIL was alive and I was muttering oaths because DH had tarried too long at the local hostelry she said I'd probably not get the husband I wanted until he was retired. I can't remember exactly what I said but I know it ended in ....off!

Having been in that position, two sets of shirts, underwear and socks are essential. Could never manage a weekend turnaround especially in the winter! And it will give you something to do in those empty evenings. Apart from not having to watch bloke TV and eat bloke food of course. There are definite advantages to time apart, which become very obvious when it stops! Retirement = half the money and twice the husband

Perhaps I'm lucky but DH washes his own clothes and I iron anything that needs doing! We've both lived on our own in our 'yoof' so perhaps it's a spin off from those heady days.

PS Just put a batch of shirts through the wash with a sachet of Glow White added, not bad result, but any advice on how to get rid of yellow underarm deodorant stains? I put a couple of mine in too, but still have yellow under the arms. I'm a clean phoenix, honestly!

Def get more shirts so you can do them in the week.

Best thing about DH retiring - the fact that no more shirts to iron. That and the freedom from packed lunch making.

Oh heavens, loads of things to answer here! Forgive me if I don't relate a response to a particular poster!

I just couldn't iron only the front of a shirt, I have no idea why.

I don't have a sewing machine, and my "attempts" at sewing stop at re- stitching the odd hem that has come adrift, and replacing buttons (For both things I expect at least a round of applause, but preferably a standing ovation)

I have thought about him ironing his own shirts, and much as I'm capable of being pretty militant on the housekeeping front, I really don't think that would be fair (unless of course he was doing it while away, assuming he had access to an iron & board) His time actually at home, i.e. here will be limited, whereas I will be here every night.

I think it's a good idea to get more shirts, especially the non iron ones, then at least that way I could do some during the week rather than have to fir it all in between late Friday evening and Sunday.

By the time a shirt has been under a jacket for half an hour, against a warm body ( ) no-one can tell whether it has been completely ironed or just topped and tailed.

Speaking of tails, if you find those lost shirts, Phoenix, and they are indeed too short in the tail, you could cannibalise one of them and sew strips of matching fabric to the others. The seam would be tucked into his trousers and never be seen. If hr is stripping off in front of another woman, then tough.
