It really is a mystery as there is a wall meeting a concrete floor under these storage seats. The wooden tops are very heavy and close down very firmly, so I cannot see how they would have got in through there. But when they next visit they will find a few traps and a lot of mouse poison.
We worked very hard to get rid of it all and to clear out all the pooed-on stuff; and family are about to go to bed in relative comfort. We hope.

We think Kiwi (who is a cat) brought it home, having killed it outside, and then left it for us under the butcher's block in the kitchen.
