I think when people PM'd their support it was because they were uncomfortable with putting their heads above the parapet when things were getting unpleasant. I can understand that. Therefore someone who felt embattled might comment that they had lots of supportive PMs.

The few I have received have always been pleasant and supportive.

I don't know what those who send abusive PMs think they are going to gain by it. They should know that they will be blocked and banned. It must be a mental aberration that drives them.

I use pms sparingly, but was taken aback when I received an abusive message from a poster, since banned. If it was an attempt to bully me, it failed.

I was on another Forum where the women, including the mods, mocked one of the men for months, and even colluded to entrap him but setting bait posts- but when I objected, I was banned... Won't say more about pm's here, but not far off. Last post on the subject.

Nelliemoser, there is nothing wrong with that at all. But not all PMs are the same...

Good point, grumps. Perhaps expressing our views on GN helps to clarify them to ourselves. That's something of an achievement in itself at times

Durhamjen, perhaps one of the frustrations of Gransnet is that so many of us are set on our tramlines that whatever we post makes no impression on people with whom we disagree, so some people resort to personal sniping. Contrary views have to be expressed, to maintain balance, but so often nothing is achieved. Just like the House of Commons!

Blimey! this "pm" business --storm in a teacup springs to mind

I informed someone on a thread that I had sent them a pm. The only reason I said so on the thread is that I rarely check my own inbox and as the person concerned was either new or had not posted much I was concerned that she wouldn't see the message.

It certainly wouldn't have occurred to me that this could be construed as being secretive or self important

I don't get emails to tell me I have a PM and one can sit in my inbox for days before I spot it. So I often tell people I've PMd them so they can check. There's nothing sinister about it, in fact it's upfront.

But that was my point, Nelliemoser. Why not just send the PM with all that personal and confidential information. Why do we have to be informed?
