This is now open for cakes and coffee and hot buttered toast. I am donating the new batch of marmalade. Enjoy.

Anyone know 'Mrs D, Mrs I, Mrs F-F-I...' as a ball bouncing rhyme?

Agus Fri 31-Jan-14 19:01:40

Yes Alie it spelt out difficulty.

Gagagran Fri 31-Jan-14 19:37:57

I used to love whip and top. We chalked pretty coloured patterns on the top which acted a bit like a kaleidoscope. Then there was hopscotch played on the pavement or school yard on a chalked pattern with a bit of shiny tile or a smooth stone. Countless skipping rhymes too! Happy days. sunshine

The whips had a leather bit to whip the top, but I always took mine off and replaced it with string, worked much better. There were seasons for different games, whip and top, marbles, skipping, hop scotch, etc.
Did you have the ritual when a funeral went past of holding your collar? We used to say, "hold your collar, never swaller"(swallow) till the funeral procession had passed by.

I see that you have been busy reminiscing. I would like to read through your messages. I'm away for thirty mins and shall return to have a nice brew and catch-up. smile

annodomini Sat 01-Feb-14 12:29:54

Yes Alie, but where I lived, it was 'MR D....MR I...' etc

soop Sat 01-Feb-14 12:51:15

Elegran I ^knew* that you would know what the coil of French knitting should be used for. I was never told. My Nana would have loved a teapot mat. If only...smile

Icyalittle The ball games were good fun. As the game progressed the movements became trickier. Same with some skipping games. I loved hopscotch and marbles. I didn't play whip and top, number. I was given a humming top for a birthday present.

kitty I played Consequences with names on too. A bit of an innocent thrill if the boy I liked best [his name was Dexter] happened to be paired with mine.

Gaga There was a skipping game...Tinker, tailor, soldier, sailor, rich man, poor man, beggar man, thief... After which came what shall I be married in...silk, satin, something or other, rags...etc

Agus and anno I'm not familiar with the spelling skipping game.

Snow fell last night. Not enough to hang around. Most of it has melted but the peaks of the islands are sparkling white.

Last evening we watched Rory meet-face-to-face with his daughter - Tortoiseshell "kitten" [she's about two and half] and marvelled at their friendliness. Tortoiseshell was mewing softly. Rory appeared to enjoy her company. He stayed outside for about half an hour...came in...went out...at least half a dozen times. At ten o'clock, I looked out to see Tortoiseshell making her way up through the copse. Rory barged through the kitchen door and settled on his rug, looking very satisfied with the encounter.

Good job he has been 'done' soop grin

Nods knowingly...wink

Galen Sat 01-Feb-14 13:55:11

Best kept in the family you know!

soop Sat 01-Feb-14 14:01:52

Galen Since Rory had his op' he's had a personality transplant. He has lost all the aggression and is now a "soft-hearted" pussy cat. He's enjoyed the best of both worlds. Looking at him as he lies stretched out in front of the fire, I would say that he possibly prefers being domesticated...hmm

Only it was a ball bouncing game - quicker and in rhythm!

Nelliemoser Sat 01-Feb-14 15:14:29

soop I can see you having two cats soon. If daughter keeps coming and communing with Rory he will tell her its best to come in and be pampered.

Charleygirl Sat 01-Feb-14 15:53:35

Nelliemoser I agree. She is creeping slowly towards the house and if daddy does not paw her to stay away, she may be tempted especially if the weather gets colder which it will do. She is getting marginally bolder and daddy does not appear to mind. A few weeks ago I think that she would have run into the undergrowth seeing daddy looking at her.

Our friends have gone after a lovely visit and a successful lunch and I need a sit down and a nice brew now. I've brought the left over chocolate pear pudding and some cream if anyone would like to try it. It's a Nigella recipe and was given thumbs up.

We had a good old reminisce and a good laugh and it felt so nice to have a catch up with news from where we used to live before transplanting here.

soop Sat 01-Feb-14 16:21:01

hmm...Nellie and Charleygirl It took many months before Rory came anyway near us. It was on the day that he sat under the roof of the wee chalet [built to protect his food from the elements] that I was able to approach his personal space. After which, he slept in the wheelie bin [on it's side] in which we placed a basket and fleeces. He used that for ages. Then he moved into a very fine kennel with door mat and. igloo cat basket [plus two fleece blankets]...after which he popped into the utility room for a quick look around and attacked me. We shall see what develops with Tortoiseshell kitten. I very much doubt that she will join us. She seems to be very satisfied with the status quo. smile

soop Sat 01-Feb-14 16:30:28

Gaga dear, it would be rude of me to not accept the remains of the chocolate pear pudding and cream. I shall away to get my big bowl and spoon.

I have remembered the skipping song 'Who shall I marry...tinker, tailor, soldier, sailor, rich man, poor man, beggar man, thief' and then, 'What shall I wear - silk, satin, muslin rags...' followed by - How shall I get to the church...etc.

AlieO thanks for the link. Happy memories! sunshine

Car would not start yesterday afternoon to go for weekly shopping. Phoned (expensive) breakdown service who do not respond if car is at your own house and local garage = 'too busy'. Local man came this am at 11.00 (had promised 9.00) and diagnosed a starter problem but car will need to go into Garage to go over pit so that they can work on it from below. Said they would tow it round on Monday morning. So phoned DD1 who brought her car along and we gave her a run home and then did shopping. She will need her car back by Monday morning and we are scheduled to do a school pick up and then a 'take to gymnastics'. Just checked and no suitable buses [Grrrr].

Anyway, when we got home, soaked and frozen, our cat Cassidy was trying to get out the front door, presumably to play in the traffic, as we brought the shopping in. So ushered him through to the back door but his 4 legged look-a-like was trying to get in the back door, with much hissing and spitting. Last week Jake (the cat with the extra leg) did manage to come in through the cat flap and when DH tried to usher him out he shot vertically up the door frame and sat astride the top of the door, H & S. We eventually got him down and out by which time Cassidy had run for the hills. Today, DH manage to slip out with some food for Jake to tempt him away from the door and Cassidy was able to leave in an orderly manner. The pair of them are now canoodling under the plum tree. What are we to do? The two cats are obviously friends or relatives but Cassidy will not tolerate having Jake in HIS i.e. OUR house. hmm

soop Sun 02-Feb-14 11:29:36

Granny23...Yesterday was certainly a bit of a "bummer" for you in more ways than one. Bless you, as if having the car to worry about you are obviously fretting over Jake's welfare. What would I do? hmm I may make a perfectly good outdoor shelter for Jake [complete with a basket and rug]. Cassidy may then understand that Jake, 'though "important", is not top cat. I would also put food out for Jake should he take fondly to the shelter. We said...NO more cats when we lost Hamish. It appears that, even in the wilds of Kintyre, a family of feral cats knew better. Tell me what happens next please. flowers

The wind is wild. Waves are white-capped as far as the eye can see. I guess that I shall have stay indoors and enjoy doing this sort of thing...wink
To be truthful, I would MISS my Granspals if this forum ceased to exist. Sounds corny I know, but I'm very fond of you lot...just saying.

Gagagran Sun 02-Feb-14 12:26:07

Your affection is reciprocated dear soop - such a haven your kitchen gives us and always with a kind and encouraging word. You are a lady and a friend to us all. Thank you. flowers

P.S. I've left apricot flapjack in the tin on the table

soop Sun 02-Feb-14 12:31:22

...and I've already eaten it, Gagagran never could resist a flapjack. grin
