I notice I seem to be the only person on here at 5.30am. Are you all good sleepers? I quite enjoy Gransnet for having a bit of a rant in the night. Going back to sleep now. G'night!

Wow ps- I am so sorry to hear you are having such trouble.

But I find it incredible that any doctor would prescribe Zopiclone AND Mirtazapine AT THE SAME TIME- both strong hypnotics. Hope you are being well supervised by your doctor. Good luck.

Insomniacs, have you listened to this? www.youtube.com/watch?v=OrYGSlEmt_I

Kiora Sun 12-Jan-14 11:10:46

Fingers crossed it is temporary ps

ps Sun 12-Jan-14 11:05:52

Kiora I must add that I hope this is a temporary condition, I have survived on 2 to 4 hours for over a year now whereas prior to that I slept like a log (never awake in a fireplace however). I do somehow manage a full time job now, was part time for a long time as I am retired, but we get there somehow.

Ps how awful. I'd never get through the day at work. I can manage for a few days but eventually I'd be in a real state. For me lack of sleep really impacts on my emotional well being. My normal sleep pattern is go to bed as late as possible around 11.30 then I might be up anytime between 3-6. There are times when it's much much less but that's not the norm and occasionally I can sleep to 7-8 but that's very very rare.

ps Sun 12-Jan-14 10:35:56

If it is any consolation to you insomniacs out there apart from an hour or so when I should have been watching 'The Bridge' on TV last night I went off at 0110 and awake at 0315 and that was with the help of 7.5mg Zopiclone and 30mg Mirtazapine. I just sat up and read until daylight. I don't feel tired but do feel weary, anxious and a little panicked. Incidentally I did not go to bed at all on Friday night but I think dozed a bit on the sofa. I am amazed at how little sleep we do survive with but wheather it is good in the long term remains to be seen.

Last night my "restless leg" kept twitching until about 2am. So with great effort I did the exercise which seems to help:
Lie on back, raise knees to chest, straighten legs up, lower slowly. 3 lots of 20 times at least. I fell asleep after that until 7am - not bad.

Kiora Sun 12-Jan-14 09:33:10

Don't worry it's a very rare occurrence. I wish I could drink more I really like alcohol and have a garage full but my tolerance has almost diminished. I probably drink less in a year than most people do in a month. Unfortunately.

Nelliemoser Sun 12-Jan-14 09:14:14

kiora I am not preaching but alcohol really messes with your sleep patterns . As I have always found by experience and it is a fact.

Also the effects of Caffeine are bad. I have recently switched back to decaf tea in the afternoon onwards. I don't touch coffee anyway, and I am sure I am sleeping better.

Went to bed at 12 after a fair few beers slept till 5 got up at 6. Good for me it's not the getting asleep(unless I'm really stressed or upset) it's the staying asleep or going back to sleep if I wake.

rockgran Sat 11-Jan-14 05:50:55

Went to bed early because I'm on the 5.2 diet. Now I'm awake and ready to eat! I don't want to start this early or I'll need a second breakfast - like Bilbo Baggins.

LizG Wed 08-Jan-14 07:36:00

Good luck for the meeting - sorry, forgot to say.

LizG Wed 08-Jan-14 07:27:24

I keep myself awake until 1am then switch off light and decide what I would do with a big Euro lottery win. This sometimes gives me a clear 5 hours sleep. Perhaps self hypnosis would help you LibraChick

Brendawymms Wed 08-Jan-14 07:19:58

I find Nytol one a night helps if taken occasionally. Not the herbal one though. Strangely enough I also find that Piriton also helps.

LibraChick Wed 08-Jan-14 06:58:18

Well Sunday night I had approx 2 hours sleep, Mon night had none, last night not any at all. Don't know how I'm getting through the days at work. Today I am minute taking at a mtg 2-4pm. Think I'm going to see if I can buy something herbal today after work any ideas, fellow insomnia a?. OH out tonight, so light dinner, bath then bed. Don't care if I only get 8 til 12. All emotional issues. I read a book, start to nod off, so book down, light off and head on pillow, voila head busy again !!!

Kiora Wed 08-Jan-14 06:20:07

Went to bed at 12 up at 4.45. At least I did sleep the problem is I will be tired at 2

bikergran Mon 30-Dec-13 14:17:53

oh yes! the same word..I had forgot about that...I used to use and...and.....and....well you get the picture. I will try and remember that tonight as I have sleep problems, drifting in and out constantly all night long...also getting off to sleep..never used to but think things kick into your head at night whilst its dark and quiet, where as during the day we are normally busy with this that n the other.

Kiora Mon 30-Dec-13 06:30:40

Spoke to soon. Up at 4.40 this morning tired now. I'm going to read through all these posts and follow some of the tips. I'll try the 'switch' tip bikergran and there was another about using the same word over and over again like a mantra. Oh dear might have known

Grindos Sun 29-Dec-13 20:26:53

I'm really happy for you, Kiora! Yes, long may it last!
TriciaF my GP won't give me sleeping pills any more, even after open heart surgery and I couldn't sleep and felt doubly lousy. I never found they helped much anyway, the first night is good, after that not.

TriciaF Sun 29-Dec-13 11:06:45

Kiora - your point about sleep affecting your emotional health. When I've had a bad night (like Friday) I'm horrible and crabby the next day, nearly provoked a divorce Sat. am.
Last night slept like a log and all bright and cheery today.
I wonder if some of you take sleeping pills? My doctor won't hear of it, though I did have them when last in hospital (hip replacement.)

Bellasnana Sun 29-Dec-13 10:01:01

I've been sleeping better for the past couple of nights and I can only think it is due to all the extra food I've been pigging out on eating lately smile

bikergran Sun 29-Dec-13 09:51:29

this may seem so very silly...but!! I ride a motorcycle (the clue is in the name lol) anyway because I have so many famlily/DH/DD/dh health probs...I was finding it really difficult to switch my problems off when going out on my bike...(one needs to be 101% alert riding a bike as well as a car, I don't mean at the same time smile anyway...!!! here it is....I went in the shed and found an old lightswitch!! you with me so far! I have it near my motorcycle gear,on the cabinet....when I have got my gear on and ready to leave the house I switch the switch off!! (telling my head right!!! you have your motorcycle head on now, forgot home worries) it does seem to work but you have to be strong minded.

maybe you could try it! but you have to focus on the switch and really believe it will switch off your problems.

rockgran Sun 29-Dec-13 09:34:23

Good for you Kiora, hope it lasts.

Kiora Sun 29-Dec-13 09:27:32

I haven't dare show my face on here for a while. Well at least a week because i'v been sleeping. Oh I do hope it lasts and I haven't jinks it. It makes me realise how much not sleeping well can have an affect on my emotional Heath.

Sook Sun 29-Dec-13 06:44:52

Morning. Had a lie in this morning 4:45am, lolled in bed for a while but obvious I was not going to sleep. Washing machine on, hounds breakfast, ready, now drinking tea before walking the hounds. Yaaaawn.
