Mention of that black/white vision reminds me - we all remember the impact of thalidomide, and the deformities it caused, but it also has valuable uses in other fields. When these were published a little while ago, there was an outcry against it being used at all, for anything, because of the feelings of those who had suffered such trauma in the past. Is this a valid reason for not utilising the drug?

Every GM advance should be considered rationally and individually.

'Wooly thinking'? I'm surprised at you JessM as I've always considered you a rational thinker.

There are two strong arguments against GM products. One has been clearly highlighted by Flickety and others. The other is a scientific one. This is not simply, selective breeding or hybridisation as some people seem to think. I know you know the difference.

According to my daughter the scientist who originally developed golden rice had intended that it should be supplied free to people who wanted it in the hope of doing some good. I suppose one might ask why so many people in Asia are still affected by vitamin deficiencies if there are already ample vitamin rich vegetables for them?

Why is it that those who agree with GM consider their thinking is rational, but those who disagree with it are considered to be woolly thinkers?
It is well known that it is impossible to prove a negative.
Once the trials are done in this country, the GM cannot be put back in the bottle. I eat organic food. I do not wish it to be contaminated with GM. The fact that the amount of GM allowable in organic foods has increased dramatically shows that the scientists are not sure of their science.

Anywhere where rice can be grown sweet potatoes and carrots are also grown. Let them eat carrots.

Yes well the prize is bloody joke isnt it. sigh. Monsanto and their flaming Roundup resistant crop got GM off to a disastrous start and prejudiced many people against anything with this label.

Jen I don't think carrots or yams do very well in rice paddies?

If the gene for beta carotene invaded other rice species would it be an ecological disaster? Should we be prioritising the concerns of organic food eaters in the west over the malnutrition of millions of babies?
GM is sometimes no different to what occurred in the agrarian revolution in the 18-19th centuries. Improving the genes of the crops. If this had not happened thousands of years ago there would be no agriculture. Have you seen the size of a wild carrot? Or the grains that our current crops are descended from. All modern crops have been genetically modified by selective breeding and lucky mutations.
