Just went to Morrison's and spotted signs saying "Stock up for Ramadan". Isn't it supposed to be a period of fasting? And one outside a pub in N Wales. "OAP Roast, Tuesdays". Surely this bears no relation to a "hog roast" or similar?
One that makes me smile is road marking on a major roundabout in Nottingham, says 'A 52 GRAN' (short for grantham) can imagine dgc thinking it's directions to grants house.
Look at this rather ambiguous inscription on this water fountain in the lovely village of Low Bradfield just west of Sheffield. DD was married in the village hall here on the edge of this cricket field. Several of the guest were amused by this .
Some years ago, I think it was in Leicestershire, a thoughtful farmer put a handwritten sign up in a country lane which read, "MUD". A few days later, a little further down the lane, some wag put a sign which read, "SHOWADDYWADDY". Someone else followed a little further down with "SWEET" and then everyone got carried away until all the groups of the 70s featured! Made me laugh, anyway.
A very small one, in a tiny font, fixed near the foot of the door in a loo - "If you can read this, you are now sitting leaning forward at an angle of 85 degrees"
Seen in railway museum. District Railway Notice. In the absence of the Ladies Waiting Room Attendant the Station Inspector is authorised to look in occasionally to see that no improper us e is made of this Room.
I drive regularly through some local long term road works. The signs restrict the speed to 40mph stating that cameras record average speeds. Near the end of the long stretch of lane closure there is another notice which reads 'Cameras not in use'. Cheeky!
Well they say "An English mans home is his castle". In our village there is a house which has been undergoing renovations for several years, on the wall there is a plaque which reads
The inner wall of the castle is dangerous, it is closed to the public during repairs.
It is fun watching passers by craning their necks to read it
