I have reported on another thread I was disgusted to see Jasmin Alihbhai Brown laughing on the Wright Stuff today. She was stating she was going to by it. The rugby player Kieran Bracken was another panelist and he was a total gentleman about it and very quietly told her what he thought about her.

Mind you also on that show she clapped like a sealion when a member of the public phoned in and said 'They should turn their back on the coffin when it passed them'.

It wasn't much better the day before when Ade Edmundson said about Margaret Thatchers funeral arrangements,'A black plastic bag will do'

Black plastic is not biodegradable but I am all in favour of wicker and cardboard coffins or just burying/burning bodies in a shroud, whether ex-prime ministers or members of the general public.

As for the "wretched song", that's all it is. Ignoring it and not making a fuss about something so utterly trivial would surely be the most effective way of silencing silly people. Censoring it renews their oxygen. Presumably all this brouhaha will die down fairly quickly after next Wednesday. I certainly hope so.

As far as 'the song' is concerned, I agree it's best ignored. Hard to do that though when it's such a disgraceful display of poor taste and insulting sentiment.

Totally agree jo8. It seems no one has the backbone to stand up for moral decency ! Those louts protesting are just that brainless louts pity they not busy working.

Margaret thatcher love her or loathe her was a mother and grandmother is utterly disgraceful to not respect their loss.

It is sheer stupid mischief-making rather than a political statement which, twenty years ago, it might have been. Most of the people who are buying the recording were either very young or unborn in the Thatcher years. It is best ignored, but the BBC is in a difficult spot. They're damned if they do and damned if they don't. Personally, I think they shouldn't.

It's a very short song. If the DJ talks a bit over the beginning and a bit over the end – as they do – there will be virtually nothing to hear.

The song itself is not, of course, offensive, except perhaps to witches and people who don't like The Wizard of Oz, so it would be political censorship to refuse to play it. Trivial enough on this count but setting a worrying precedent. Also not playing it just adds flame to the fire.

Taste is a matter of opinion. I love the song and if it's at Number 1 I expect it to be played. If people had downloaded the Funeral March would that have been more acceptable.

Why show respect in death to someone I had no respect for in life. If she doesn't like it she can always come back and haunt me.

vampirequeen, I agree with your sentiments about Lady Thatcher, but I do have sympathy with her family. I feel sure that she was a loving and loved grandmother and I hope her grandchildren are not listening to some of the celebratory venom being spilt about her death. As far as I am concerned, she died long ago.

Neither of them exactly rushed back did they. The day my dad died I dropped everything and travelled to where he was even though I had to borrow the money to get there.

As long as the presenter does not link the song to Mrs Thatchers death then they should play it. How many people actually listen to the "Top 40" show in any event. All the people who have downloaded the song have done is to line the pockets of Sony (I think). Most people will just ignore it.

I am more concerned about a report on local radio this morning that a local Conservative party office has been attacked by vandals.

ginny The song is not offensive. The way it has been used could be regarded as offensive and is certainly distasteful but that doesn't make the song offensive per se.
