On Today this morning, a contributor said that around 50% of the population of the UK lives within five miles of where they lived when they were 14. I wonder if this is true of Gransnetters? Some of us seem to be very far from our childhood homes. I'm 150 miles away but only about 20 from where I was born.
Before that age, and in between times, up and down the UK. Settled here again, 10 miles away from the village where I lived when I was 14.
I was born in a hospital near Sheffield, lived at Hoyland then Elsecar, both just outside Barnsley, till I was nearly 13, then moved across the Pennines to live with my grandma in Rochdale, which is where I was aged 14, then 2 years after we married we moved a mile or so away to Heywood, then almost 36 years ago we came to live in Lincolnshire, where we are now. Therefore, I`m about 150 miles from where I was aged 14.
I live exactly 8.5 miles from where I did when I was 14.
Nope! Thank goodness.
Currently living about 30 miles from where I did when I was 14 (not very far from you Gorki ) We spent 24 years in Cornwall but eventually gave up the unequal struggle to make a living there and came up to Berkshire. Prior to Cornwall I'd only moved a couple of miles from home.
15 miles.
Now living 3 miles from where I was born and 2 from where mr.glamma born, moved to Morganporth nr.New Quay and lived there for 2 yrs then back to Wirral for over 30yrs off to Spain for nearly 10yrs and now back where we started.
I am now about 25 miles from birthplace & where I was at 14. In between went to Africa and NE England & subsequently lived in London SE5, SE22, SW19 and SW20 until July 2011 when we moved here to mid Surrey.
My daughters also 25 miles form where they were at 14, OH probably 30 miles as he lived in London SW18 at 14!
I'm about 5 miles from where I lived at age 14, and less than 10 from where I was born, and my parents were born.
I was born and raised in Sutton Coldfield and lived near Sutton Park and we moved to Wylde Green and I went to school in Sutton and Four Oaks. We then moved to Uttoxeter, Stafford, Dudley and now Sheffield, although we are nearer to Worksop and live in a village. So, hmm I don't think I am anywhere near where I was when I was 14. I still love Sutton Coldfield but didn't recognise it when we went to visit a few years ago. Many happy memories of where I was when I was 14 though.
I'm also a Londoner and have simply moved 15 miles North of where I was born and grew up and my two sisters and my mother have all followed suit, albeit after many years. My son lives 10 miles from us and we are still in the house he was brought up in. My daughter made it to Birmingham for 5 years but is back with us. On the other hand, my husband grew up 120 miles away and my mother is 250 miles from where she was born. Quite unusual for someone of her generation I think.
I remember the scout international jamboree in Sutton park when I was a girl guide! Must have been the 50s.
I'm about 50 miles from where I lived when I was 14, which is also where I was born.
DH is probably about 120 miles away, although he's closer now to his birthplace in London, within Bow Bells!
We live where we do because of DH's job; I can work more or less anywhere.
Currently 12,000 miles away, normally 1,000 miles away - I got out of Salford as fast as I could. My late brother and my sister and two of her sons never moved more than 10 miles away, albeit to the 'good' district of Ellesemere Park in one case, in a house worth almost half a million.
I hated Salford and still do. There are some very lovely parts of Lancashire, such as the Trough of Bowland, but Salford/Manchester is not one of them.
I'm another of the other 50%. I left home to go to uni when I was eighteen and since then the nearest I've lived to the place I lived when I was fourteen is about 90 miles, and that was only for one year. The rest of the time I've lived further away, the furthest being over 6000 miles. Most of the time, it has been between 200 and 250 miles away.
My parents didn't live near where they grew up and neither did my grandparents. My grown up daughters don't live near where they grew up either.
Why 14 I wonder?
I am now about 1,000 miles away from where I was brought up and when I am back in UK I am about 160 miles away. The nearest I ever lived to where I lived when 14 was when I lived in another part of Surrey for twenty years.
I was born in Brighton, live in Beirut for a couple of years, then moved to London when I married. Now live in Surbiton.
I live about 5 miles from where I was born. We lived in Germany for three years, but couldn't wait to get back to UK. We recently went back to the town were we lived in Germany, for a short break. It was beautiful and I wonder why I didn't appreciate it 40 years ago!
I live about 2 miles from where I grew up. I have only lived in 3 houses. I left home to get married at 21. We lived in that house which was still in my home town for 13 yrs. Then moved 1mile from there. Still here 26 yrs later.
OH is from London. I wanted to move there when we married but he liked this semi rural area. And of course property is much cheaper.
Galen, I went to that Scout jamboree in Sutton park too. I lived in Walmley, Sutton Coldfield until I was 13. I now live 8 miles from the place I lived in from then until I went to uni. I have moved quite a bit but in the same area. Another move necessary and urgent because of DH failing health. Wish we didn't have to go from our home!
I never thought about this before Lilygran but I was born in my grandmas old house which is just 3 miles away from where I now live (we only moved here about 18 months ago) . My grandma is 97 and now lives in a little bungalow which is every closer to us.
I live on the other side of the world from West Yorkshire where I was born and lived to age 19, when I had a year or two in Vienna. However, while I was still in the UK, I spent most of the time very close to where I was at 14, apart from 4 years in Portsmouth which was not a choice but a necessity - DH was a sailor.
No, born and brought up in Scottish Borders, then university, and married sttraight after graduating. Moved to London like so many of my peers and stayed there until move to North Bucks, mid-80's When I do go back to the Borders, I feel half and half "at home" and a complete stranger. Miss having roots really.
I'm seven miles away from where I grew up. Mr H grew up two miles away from Me. Our son lives near us, but our daughter lives 300 miles away - she'd love to come home, though. I love to travel, but have no desire to live anywhere else - this, I feel, is where I belong. That said, if my son also moved in the direction of my daughter (not unlikely for work purposes), then we would rent out this house and rent a place near them. I'll definitely end my days here, though! My roots are in the soil here!
