I support giving foreign aid and if it was cut and my pension increased accordingly, I would increase my charity donations to organisations like WaterAid, Save The Children, UNICEF and a couple of others. Government's job is to ensure that aid is spent appropriately, and to influence India whose space programme is not funded by foreign aid but business and international interests. I don't know enough about the Indian economy, but an academic whose opinion I trust has just returned from working in India for the Indian Times, and she assures me there is much misinformation circulating about their space programme, which is gathering momentum in terms of related employment and overseas investment. Immigrants and overseas visitors will train Indian citizens, help with a building programme and foreign aid should reduce accordingly, but abandoning support now would have negative results.
I don't equate the level of deprivation in this country with that of India. When the majority of Indian people have a living standard at the level of the early 20th century in the UK, I might alter my view.
