Was given the whole series of Murder Books, enjoyed the first one, gave up on second didn't read 3 or 4, except first few ages as it was more of the same then,m We Solve Murders, so many characters, all apart from odd one
thoroughly awful and insane. I did not find it amusing or a good murder mystery.
He must have many fans or they wouldn't sell, I can't see why though.

Got bored with Richard Osman’s books.
Currently enjoying a ‘cosy crime’ series by Julia Chapman, starting with Date with Death. Set in North Yorkshire, they get even better as the series progresses. I usually alternate a light read with a heavier one.

I've read and enjoyed the Thursday Murder Club books but didn't rate the We Solve Murders. M W Craven books are very good

I have read all of the Thursday Murder Club, along with Richard Cole’s Canon Daniel Clement books.

I found them to be easy reads. I do not want to always be challenged or educated by a book. A pleasant way to spend some time curled up in the chair/sofa for some escapism.

Agree, nice to relax to. The second or third ( forget which now) was not good) but the rest are enjoyable to me.
I also read loads of other books but, like TV, sometimes you just want easy entertainment!

Casdon The thing Richard Osman is ‘doing right’ is being in the public eye, and constantly interviewed on tv etc.
I have a bit of a thing about this, being a writer myself. There are so many marvellous, inspirational writer who are unknown and unacknowledged . They never get a look in , as publishing follows the money.

Have never been able to stomach Richard Osman, as a tv personality or a writer. He's so smug. Obviously he had the answers in front of him on Pointless so he could be as smug as he wanted. He and Armstrong made a good pairing..creepy.
I tried to read his first book to perhaps change my opinion, but quickly relegated his his writing skills to the 500 words a day category (whether those words are interesting or not). Just like Dan Brown....airport trash.
As for his House of Games, was ever there a more obvious game show that is clearly completely fixed? At least he's off it now and the new presenter is fun and personable.

Ive read and enjoyed the Tuursday Murder Club series but I just cant get into We solve murders. I believw therevis avlot of snobbery about him and his books

Shel1951 Wed 21-Oct-26 16:56:32

I didn’t realise that Richard Cole’s wrote books. What a multi talented man he is.

icanhandthemback Wed 21-Oct-26 17:12:15

I love Richard Cole but Murder at the Vicarage was an awful read for me. It put me off buying anything he writes!

I read "We Solve Murders" and I was about 2/3 in before I worked out who was who and what was happening it was very confusing and I must admit I can't see what the fuss is about him.
If you like a good detective (without any swearing ) on Kindle unlimited Rhys Dylan inspector Warlow series. Really good read , funny and good team work police mystery.

I agree. Enjoyed the first as it was something different, was given the second, hated it and refused to read any more !

I don't think Richard Osman is a brilliant writer; I think he has the advantage of being well known, so didn't have a struggle getting a foot in the publishing world. He'll never produce books the calibre of the late, lamented PD James, but I can tolerate his fluffy style easily enough if I'm in the mood for something undemanding. And I didn't enjoy the film of The Thursday Murder Club half as much as the cast clearly did!

Mauriherb Wed 21-Oct-26 19:19:48

I agree with a previous comment that if he wasn't on TV so much these books would probably not have been published

MayBee70 Wed 21-Oct-26 19:37:55

I listen to a lot of podcasts especially Goalhanger ones but I don’t really like the one Richard Osman does; The Rest is Entertainment.

sodapop Wed 21-Oct-26 19:40:00

Osman's books are boring, one of the reasons I usually avoid books written by 'celebs'. If he was an ordinary member of the public his books would not see the light of day.

What books some posters find boring, others will enjoy.

I would never rubbish anyone’s choice of reading matter, nor their TV, film or music choices.

Aren’t we lucky to live in a free country and have an abundance of resources to choose from.

I enjoy the Thursday Murder Club series but didn't enjoy We Solve Murders so won't be reading the second in the series.

Terribull. Yes. I feel the same way. I managed one only.(Skim read most of it too....) Also, AGAA4 and Oreo. Yes. Hence, I will just say, not for me, and leave it at that. smile

Well I've enjoyed all the Thursday Murder Club books and hope there will be more. They are light hearted and funny, and the relationship between Joyce and her daughter is so like me and my daughter at times.

Nandalot Wed 21-Oct-26 21:31:01

If you want a light, but enjoyable read, I have just read the Slater and Norman mysteries set in Hampshire by P F Ford and his books set in Anglesey. They are free with kindle unlimited.

Thisismyname1953 Wed 21-Oct-26 23:01:27

I’ve enjoyed watching him on House Of Games but I tried to read his first book when it came out but I had to give up a third of the way through.
I love a nice murder and am an avid reader usually, his murder club series is a load of tosh and I don’t understand why he has given up his quiz show in order to concentrate on writing more of the same .

Luckygirl3 Wed 21-Oct-26 23:22:28

One sleb who rights a good book is Graham Norton.

MayBee70 Thu 22-Oct-26 01:58:57

I love Graham Norton!

StTrinians Thu 22-Oct-26 20:35:32

eddiecat78. I don't agree. It is definitely not snobbery. We simply all have different tastes. I prefer a satisfying read. It doesn't have to be a classic. We are all entitled to reject RO books if we don't feel that they are well written. I took the book out of the library, out of curiosity, and even then I felt I had totally wasted my time. Finishing the book was a hollow feeling. That is very unusual for me. I gave him a chance, but if I don't enjoy a book then I certainly won't repeat that experience with more of the same ilk. Life is far too short for that kind of discomfort. wink
