Short novel for book group!

Frankenstein by Mary Shelley.
Very short , probably more novelette, but very interesting especially regarding humanity and it's failings.

Of Mice and Men by Ernest Hemingway.

The Things We Never Say by Elizabeth Stroutt is very short and very good.

Seascaper by Benjamin Wood is also very good.

On Chesil Beach by Ian McEwan

😁

Thanks for letting us know Oreo.
How do members resurrect old threads??
I keep getting sucked in. Am confused at the best of times.

I think the book group has come and gone in March😃
However if anyone else wants a very short thought provoking book then Three To See The King by Magnus Mills is a good one.

Mothering Sunday by Graham Swift

Three Days in June by Anne Tyler

I would recommend anything written by the amazing Anne Tyler.

Luckygirl3

Orbital by Samantha Harvey.

Mesmerising .....

I would second this.

I bought it when I got super interested in the recent Artemis mission and it is a brilliant read.

Hello, my name is Stephen. I’m retired, and most of my stories were originally written for our grandchildren.

I thought it would be lovely if other children could enjoy them too.

If you have a little one to read the free story with, I’d especially love to know what they think. Children can be very honest critics! 😊

My aim is simple: to write stories that both the child and the person reading to them can enjoy together.

The Girls of Slender Means - Muriel Spark.
Quartet in Autumn - Barbara Pym.

ANY BOOKS BY MICHEAL MORPUGO
War Horse

Not large books small but real life and informative about history that i never knew about or was taught about at school

Some interesting suggestions here, thanks! We have read some of them, the Claire Keegans, and A Month In The Country, and Orbital. Will be checking several titles!

"Our Souls at Night" by Kent Haruf.
A really quick read.

James Joyce Dubliners. Short stories interlink but work equally well read independantly.

I second Small Things like These by Claire Keegan.

You might try The Belle Fields and sequel Ashes of Roses by Lora Adams? Two short books I really enjoyed! Covers differences above stairs and below stairs in a big house late 1890's early 1900's. Very descriptive, fast moving, happy / sad times and a real surprise ending! Enjoy if these are chosen

I read with the Year 4 children. Strangely interesting series of Sherlock Holmes books

The Gentleman from Peru by André Aciman.

Susan Hill's 'I'm the King of the Castle', I've just reread it for tutoring purposes and had forgotten how excellent it is!

I'll second that. I think 'The Woman in Black' also by Susan Hill, is very good and quite short.

Kreutzer Sonata/Family Happiness, Tolstoy (novellas).

Another vote for any of Stroutt's Lucy Barton novels.

A Month in the Country by J L Carr. Beautiful book with lots to discuss but pretty short. Our group loved it, even the Polish-speaking lady! And there's a film starring a very young Colin Firth

Vinegar Girl by Anne Tyler. Based on The Taming of the Shrew, and very enjoyable.
