The book I read is A View from the Harbour. It’s set in a seaside town in the ?1950’s and relates the inhabitants’ doing but not in a Miss Read manner.
That’s set in 17thC Britain. It’s got a bit of magic realism in it which isn’t really my bag but it’s a very light touch.
