Thanks are due to the lovely GNs who, some months ago, suggested books that might rekindle my love of reading.
I'm hooked on CJ Sansom's Shardlake series, utterly engrossing.
I'm really surprised just how much I'm enjoying reading historical 'Whodunit', probably the last thing I'd have chosen a few months ago.

I'm reading A God in Ruins by Kate Atkinson, have nearly finished it, I just don't want it to end.
I loved A Place Called Winter by Patrick Gale, enjoyed The Sunrise by Victoria Hislop and must admit to finding Elizabeth is Missing one of the most depressing books I've read in a long time.

Mrs Woo - my daughter gave me Elizabeth is Missing for Christmas 2014 and said she would like to read it after me. She really disliked it and found it depressing. I quite enjoyed it although it was a bit predictable. Some months ago I offered it to other members of the BookClub I go to. Somone announced she didn't want to read about dementia and no one was interested to read it yet last week a copy was offered and almost everyone wanted it! I'm about to start A God In Ruins, love Kate Atkinson's books. Like Victoria Hislop too, have The Thread on my TBR pile.

I`m enjoying Holy Island. I love Lindisfarne, but it feels strange reading about murders taking place in a place I know so well, I can recognise the areas where the story is taking place.

Just finished The Lake House by Kate Morton. Not bad, a tad too long I thought.

I also loved Holy Island and have Sycamore Gap on my Kindle to read list.

Nearly finished Holy Island, it`s been brilliant!

annsixty Sat 20-Feb-16 04:39:53

I have started Sycamore Gap and it does follow on from Holy Island so that should be read first to make sense of it. It is taking place near Hadrian's wall so far in.

'A God in Ruins' by Kate Atkinson is astounding. What a book. What a writer! I found it to be far better than 'Time after time" which I thought was a bit gimmicky. She could retire now and never write again and still feel that she's written a true classic in 'A God in Ruins'.

Thanks Jane I will try and read this book.Have found all of Kate Atkinsons books worth reading, some more than others of course.Loved Time After Time, Behind The Scenes At The Museum, also the detective trio of books. There may be more than three in that series, not sure. The Brody ones.

Has anyone read The curious Incident Of The Dog in The Night Time? By Mark Haddon. If you know anyone with autism, it will chime with you, and if you don't, you will still like the book.

Bellanonna Sat 20-Feb-16 11:23:10

Read it a while ago, Roses, and really enjoyed it. Meant to see the West End play but unfortunately missed it.
Currently reading The Taxidermist's Daughter by Kate Mosse, who wrote the Carcassone Trilogy, and next in the pile is the Kate Atkinson as described above.

rosesarered Sat 20-Feb-16 11:27:20

Good job you missed it Bella or you may have been at the theatre when the roof collapsed ( remember that?)in London.

I have just finished "The Summer Book" by Tove Jansson, who wrote the Moomin Valley books. This was her first adult book. I think I shall read more of them.

An elderly artist and her six-year-old grand-daughter while away a summer together on a tiny island in the gulf of Finland. Not very long, but a lovely picture of the relationship between a little girl and her grandmother. A lot of ploys by grandmother are recognisable to a gran.

I enjoyed the book and the show is one of the best I've seen.

Marelli Sat 20-Feb-16 11:49:19

I'm just about finished Kate Atkinson's 'When Will There be Good News'. Picked it up at the GP's surgery the other day and am really enjoying it. I'll keep an eye out for 'A God in Ruins'.

Elegran Sat 20-Feb-16 11:51:11

Before that, I read "Secrets of the Sea House" by Elisabeth Gifford.

The Amazon blurb says "Based on a real nineteenth-century letter to The Times in which a Scottish clergyman claimed to have seen a mermaid, Secrets of the Sea House is an epic, sweeping tale of loss and love, hope and redemption" It is also a picture of life in the Hebrides when the big sheep were replacing people on the land.

Marelli Sat 20-Feb-16 11:55:45

I read that last year, Elegran. Really enjoyed that.

Bellanonna Sat 20-Feb-16 12:28:39

Ooh, maybe not such an unfortunate miss after all, then, Roses !

numberplease Sat 20-Feb-16 20:52:45

Marelli, I`m glad you`ve enjoyed When Will There Be Good News? I read it through, but it didn`t do anything for me. I`m currently reading The Munitions Girls, by Rosie Archer, set in 1943 around a group of girls who work in a munitions factory in Gosport, good so far.

Marelli Sat 20-Feb-16 21:29:29

number, it can be a bit off-putting here and there, because the characters do a lot of 'ruminating' Must finish it though, to see where Dr Hunter's gone!

MontanaGal Sat 20-Feb-16 21:50:08

Just finished reading "The French Gardner" by Santa Montefiore. Very good, and will be on my list of "rereads" for the future. Also recently read "The Madonnas of Leningrad" by Debra Dean, which is set in Leningrad during WWII.

numberplease Sat 20-Feb-16 23:27:51

I`ve read and liked a couple of books by Santa Montefiore, but not The French Gardner, must look out for that one. I`m really enjoying The Munitions Girls.
