Jersey Royals

I’m talking about genuine Jersey Royal, loose, grubby with soil and you can practically rub the skin off ( I don't just scrub and boil). Tescos come in plastic bags and I’ve looked on line but can’t seem to find any.
So where can I get them? Anyone seen them? Even our farm shop don’t do them.

Last year my local Co-op sold Jersey Gold potatoes which were really flavoursome. I haven't seen any this year.

Actually forgot to say, we don’t ever peel or scrape new potatoes just give them a good scrub with a potato bristle brush, remove any obvious flaws before cooking them.

Of course some people may prefer their new potatoes slightly hard, but we don’t here.

Nope 😂
They hold their shape but nice and soft inside and delicious.

we used to love them, but over the years they just don't seem to taste the same...maybe it's my taste buds ,

I think it could well be our taste buds that we lose as we age😣
Friends always say how good my new potatoes are, I use plenty of salt to cook them in, with a sprig of mint in the water and cook for 50 mins at least on a rolling boil. Then add butter and chopped chives. All these things give tasteless potatoes some real taste.

50 minutes???*. Aren’t they boiled to a mush?

I can’t find real jerseys, Tesco ones I’ve bought in plastic been horrible and nothing like original..ridiculous not being able to get a decent jersey.. Bring back the greengrocers

I was told the flavour is not the same as farmers are not allowed to fertilise them with seaweed any more. I no longer buy them as they don't taste like they used to.

I grow my own kind of. I cut and plant small pieces of potatoes that have started to sprout and pick them early so they're still small

The potato variety used to grow Jersey Royals are International Kidney. So far I haven't found any to buy but will definitely be looking out for them again next year to grow in our allotment. Will also see if I can find a seaweed extract to enhance the flavour as I believe Jersey use actual seaweed in their potato production.

Jersey Royals used to have such a definite and individual taste but for the last few years I've found them completely tasteless. Had 3/4 lots this year from different stores but no different to any old potato.

I bought 2 bags from Morrisons last week, they were quite large and tasted good.

SpinDriftCoastal Fri 29-May-26 21:22:18

Cook them for about 15 to 20 minutes depending on size. They are delicious hot with butter and mint or cold with a little mayonnaise or vinaigrette.

I saw some in Waitrose a few days ago. They looked good and I was tempted - until I saw the price.

Lived in Jersey in the Seventies next to a Potato Farm. Most Jersey potatoes at that time were sold loose in the UK covered with some of the soil they were grown in.

The earliest ones were often called Jersey New Potatoes.

Memory Lane. Delish with a knob of butter

Have you tried ordering through Riverford? Theirs are pretty good.

Does any one remember Jersey mids? They were much smaller and so delicious!

I remember Jersey Mids. My mum always bought them when they were in season. They were delicious! Like Royals it even better

Bazza Fri 29-May-26 18:13:11

They taste nothing like they used to, to me anyway, and I’ve bought them from various places. Apparently the Jersey farmers used to spread seaweed on as a mulch but had to stop when we left the EU. I just buy new potatoes that look ok and they taste as good as Jersey Royals. Or have we just lost some sense of taste?!

Don't bother with Tesco's Jersey Royals. I bought a small bag of their "finest" a couple of weeks ago but they were awful, dry and a bit powdery. I'm a long time Tesco shopper btw. I was so disappointed, especially as I don't eat potatoes often, that I bought a few seed potatoes, Pentland Javelin, and put them in big pots.
If you have a local market, why not try there?

gwyneth28 Fri 29-May-26 17:47:27

We got beautiful mucky loose ones in Sainsbury's.

MissAdventure Fri 29-May-26 17:31:18

They are on Amazon for a good price, as part of their Morrisons grocery shopping items.
If you spend 60 on an order of shopping, its free delivery.

So, presumably they are in "real" morrisons shops?

tanith Fri 29-May-26 17:24:48

Thanks for the suggestions sadly none in my Tesco

Siptree Fri 29-May-26 17:23:26

They had the loose ones in my local Tesco yesterday.

cc Fri 29-May-26 15:50:42

I've just checked the Ocado site and they sell several different brands, including M&S. So I guess you'd be able to get them in larger M&S stores?

^and cook for 50 minutes at least on a rolling boil^

50 minutes?

Surely not!

Should that read 15 minutes?

Nope, 50 minutes any less and they’re still slightly hard.
