Can anyone help - do you recall the tv shows such as Tiswas or Noels HouseParty where a pie in the face or a seat in the gunge tank caused a chuckle on a Saturday night? Has the humor in everything these days gone?

I'm not a fan of slapstick either, apart from pantomime I never found it funny. Couldn't stand Norman Wisdom.

I ve seen people curl up with laughter at watching him but I was always left po faced

Petra, I’ve seen thst video before but it still makes me laugh.

I can’t stand slapstick.

I for one am glad it’s died. I never found it funny, even as a child.
I don’t remember the children’s tv programmes mentioned, and when I was older the likes of Norman Wisdom left me cold.

I’ve never found slapstick funny. It’s OK in pantomime as an art form but other than that it leaves me cold.

Same here. I just want to cringe.

You and me both. Never tickled my funny bone!

I have never found it funny, either. I remember being at my grandparents’ house around 35 years ago and Mr. Bean was being shown for the first time. My mother and I were the only two people in the room not laughing - to us it was too silly to laugh at.

Magenta - I think those videos were sent in by the people themselves and they were also paid, I believe. So, they basically asked to be ‘humiliated’

Their children didn’t.

Magenta8 that would probably be You’ve Been Framed. I never tuned in until Harry Hill did the commentary and then I found it quite funny. But was no fan of the practical joke programmes like Beadle’s About or one with Dom Jolly. Noel Edmond’s did them too on the radio and on the telly. I think humour is not funny when it seeks to make someone the butt of a joke.

Can’t quote you for some reason, Magenta.

I think that was “You’ve been Framed”.

Awful. They also had videos of kids crying after they hurt themselves, which was sick.

Petra, that little girl singing her heart out made me laugh 😂.

I loved Motherland and Amandaland. Waiting for the new series 👍.

Nothing at all funny about something that causes humiliation to anyone!

There used to be a horrendous TV programme that was nothing but home videos of people falling over or out of chairs or into water or whatever and it was accompanied by a laughter soundtrack.

crazyH Sun 12-Apr-26 20:00:20

No Petra - haven’t watched Motherland

Loved Tiswas andSpit the dog. There was also a guy on Tiswas who would constantly bang his head with a tray whilst singing very badly. It was of it's day and I wouldn't find it funny now.

But the pie and gunge no longer exists?

Sorry, never found that funny really, even as a kid.

Rocketstop2 Sun 12-Apr-26 19:25:10

Ooh yes, loved TISWAS, it was very naughty ! It was Sally JAMES you wee trying to think of OP !

I liked some modern day slapstick but had to be done by the right people like Rik Mayall , Vic Reeves and Bob Mortimer etc .

Slapstick was fine in the Silent Film era - a total lack of dialogue meant that communicating the storyline was done 100% visually, and slapstick was laid on with a trowel.

But it really should stay in the past.

M0nica Sun 12-Apr-26 17:46:28

I am another one who finds slapstick boring.

When i was a child Ds and I used to go to these childrens parties organised for a large group of us. They always ended witth laurel and Hardy, Charlie Chaplin films. Ds and I would sit at the back bored stiff and waiting for our parents to collect us.

I prefer wit to humour.

BlueBelle Sun 12-Apr-26 17:37:39

Never found slapstick funny at all, I thought it was just me but seems a few on here share that view with me. I just don’t find it funny, it’s always predictable.

Poppyred Sun 12-Apr-26 17:33:45

Just didn’t find it funny….

petra Sun 12-Apr-26 17:25:53

I love humour but slapstick leaves me cold.
I’ve watched this video so many times but it’s still leaves me howling with laughter.

Not a fan but there are plenty of reruns of ‘some mother’s do ave ‘em’ and ‘Mr Bean’, which I think are mainly slap stick humour.
My mum loved slapstick and enjoyed Norman Wisdom films for this reason.

I liked Tiswas - wasn’t Chris Tarrant on that? Sally something and ofcourse Keith Chegwin, who sadly is no longer with us.
Slapstick has now been replaced by Satire. YouTube has a young woman called Philomena Punk - you will have a good laugh at her interviews with famous people.
As I’ve aged, I don’t find slapstick as entertaining.

Have you seen her in Motherland brilliant 😂

Eloethan Sun 12-Apr-26 17:21:01

Everyone has a different view of what is funny. Personally, I don't usually like "pie in the face" sort of humour but still think Some Mothers do 'Ave 'Em is funny - though it is of course utterly ridiculous.

I like Chris Tarrant and enjoyed his style of humour, especially when he was on Capital Radio.
