Coloured hair at 70

Do what suits you and makes you happy. Maybe your friends will revert again after trying out grey hair, who knows. My friends don't tell me how to dress or do my hair, and I don't tell them.

My 90 year old DM still proudly colours her own hair (and does her eyebrows with an old school crayon!).

I don’t just want to fade away into oblivion, hope I can do the same…

I felt like your friend and grew my blonde highlights out. My hair no longer seemed to suit my face, it was obviously coloured. Somehow grey hair seems more appropriate now at 72, though my hair is still just below my shoulders, I still wear eye makeup every day and I don’t wear old lady clothes.

You do what you want, the only one who can give you constructed suggestions is your Hairdressers.
Mine changes my highlight colour frequently.

Your friends might be doing these changes for financial reasons, not because they wants to go grey.
Ignore them, be proud to be Blonde.

Why would her opinion matter one jot ? Do whatever is good for you ! Sounds to me she is simply parroting what so called friends have supposedly said ! Peer pressure not a good look after a certain age .

I am 70 and have my roots done every three months. I am probably quite grey now but have it dyed brown with copper and gold highlights.

My sister and I have decided “we’ll never go grey “we are 70 and 73 respectively. I have a cut and colour/ highlight every seven weeks. My first pay packet in the late sixties was spent on a shampoo & set - then every week till the children arrived !!

Still having high lights at 82. Don’t intend to give up any time soon.

My mum still has her hair coloured a light caramel colour, and she’s 94. It’s entirely your choice, and it very much depends if you like your natural grey colour or not - some people have beautiful grey or white hair, others, like my family, look like piebalds. It’s whatever makes you feel good.

When I was 70 I had the back layers coloured deep purple.
Kept it like that for a while before returning to beige blonde
after deciding white grey hair does not suit me.

When I grow old I shall wear purple as the poem goes and I did love it,

Like my Dad my hair didn’t go grey until quite late. We were both dark brown with a bit of red. I coloured it for several years then decided to go grey gracefully about 3 years ago. Mum had beautiful pure white hair and was always getting compliments.

I have some L’oreal colour perfect in gold or beige and use one of those when I feel I need a change. They only last a couple of washes and just add a touch of colour. Nobody ever comments so they must look natural. Not sure if they are discontinued now. I bought several as An assistant told me she heard they were on way out.

I'm a natural red head (ginger colour not chesnut) who started to die my hair using henna as my natural colour faded. I had to grow the henna because it doesn't wash away. This meant having the roots done with dye until the henna had all been cut away.

I reverted to highlights and lowlights which cost an arm and a leg until I realised that the sun faded the colours. They were very subtle but just made my hair look pretty. I have been my natural colour (very faded) for about 10 years and I quite like it.

I think it depends upon the colour of one's face as to the colour that the hair is dyed. Own up grey is quite fashionable at the moment. Helen Mirren and Andie McDowell at a recent premiere both had their natural grey hair and looked great.

However, some people can take a very strong colour, such as Zandra Rhodes with her shocking pink.

I was also a redhead. Stopped having any colouring 2016 after saying I would never go grey. Like you the natural colour has simply faded with white "highlights" , I'm often asked who my hairdresser is !

My natural hair colour was chestnut brown. When I started to go grey - quite late at about 50 - I had it coloured the same colour to cover the grey.

Once I got to 60 I thought it looked a bit harsh against my complexion. I stripped all of the dye out. This wasn't a 100% success as my hair ended up a bit orange.

I started dyeing it a lighter colour. Fortunately, we went on a couple of sunny holidays and this lightened my hair more. I then went one shade lighter again. With it being lighter, I don't have a distinct grey root line when it need doing.

My hair is mid blonde. I dye it myself using Nice and Easy (No. 8) and it doesn't look a solid colour. I must have enough dark hair left to make it look highlighted.

I am always debating leaving it to go natural grey. I am put off as I think I would also look like a piebald.

I mention it every time I go to have my haircut and my hairdresser always says to keep it blonde-ish.

My friend has let her hair go grey. It is snow white and looks lovely. She says it is in much better condition than when she dyed it.

I worry about looking like a bag lady. I don't wear makeup but I do have a good haircut.

If you are on Facebook, have a look at a page called The Gray Book - it is all women who are letting their hair go grey. Some of them are stunning.

I have a friend of 72 who has 3 or 4 NHS supplied wigs, all shades of brown/copper, I know she’ll carry on wearing them.

We should all do as we please! Surely this is the rule.

Everyone can do what they like about their own appearance and everyone can have an opinion on what they think looks good and what doesn’t.

Personally, I do not like the look of coloured or long hair on older people but that does not mean that they shouldn’t have it.

I had naturally very dark chestnut hair. When it developed a light coloured streak down one side I liked it, so my hairdresser added a few more. I had increasing highlights added as my natural colour faded. When I couldn’t get out during lockdown and shielding it grew and went feral. I loved the colour and it looked great with a decent cut. Never coloured it since.

There really isn’t an age when you should stop the dye, or indeed if you should even start the dye in the first place. It’s your hair, do what you want!

My friend is 84 and has her hair coloured, almost black. I am quite a few years younger and seeing her, I have no intention of showing my grey 😂

Mine hasn't gone grey yet - should I have it dyed grey as I'm over 70?

I don’t like long hair on older people unless it is put up in an elegant bun. But then, I bet they don’t care about my opinion.
