Nice (affordable!) places to live in Liverpool

ComeOnGran if you want a bungalow Formby and Southport are cheaper. Crosby bungalows mini of £280,000 and up. Waterloo is a nice area but very few bungalows .

If you want a house Crosby,Waterloo,Formby and Southport are all affordable. Birkdale ,Ainsdale ,Blundell sands all expensive. Hightown is nice but only if you drive no good if you need buses.

I live in Crosby so does my daughter but we only see eachother once a week we have our own lives.

If you do want a bungalow you need to snap it up quick as they go quickly.

In 3.5 years I have lived here my bungalow has increased in value by £100.00. Glad I moved when I did.

Healthcare here is brilliant. Once 60 men and women get a free bus / local rail pass . I can go as far as Chester for free on the train. You can even use it on the ferry. There are plenty of things to join and the people are lovely. I have never had such good neighbours. I moved over 100 miles and it feels like I have always lived here..

Thank you! After travelling 250 miles each way to visit my family this seems close, but I appreciate I might think otherwise after a few years.

My aunt lived in Southport for many years and really loved it.

I lived in Meols and Hoylake, with family in Moreton and West Kirby. All lovely places but not too convenient for Crosby area.

A relative has moved from the South to Formby. They bought a lovely house as property is much cheaper than the SE. They love it, lots of lovely walks on the dunes in the nature reserve. Station within walking distance, good shopping locally for everyday and Liverpool for a greater choice. A short drive to Crosby or hop on the train. We love to visit and have found lots of interesting places to visit. Very flat so good for cycling!

Thank you all very much for your really helpful replies. I think to really narrow our search we need to spend more time in some of these places - once I’m retired we will be able to go up for longer periods than we do at the moment.

It really does depend on your budget and what you would get for your money. It would be good if you bought property in an area serviced by the same rail network. I am very familiar with the Crosby area the train service goes to Southport.
I have family living on the Wirral in two different areas. Our family business was on the Wirral its not where I would live lovely as it is in some areas. It would also be too far from my GC. Good look with your move wherever you decide to go too.

Places in Wirral, especially those mentioned, will appeal but involve up to an hour’s train journey. West Kirby takes some beating; in fact there are so many desirable locations such as Port Sunlight it’s difficult to mention them all.
Short, direct train journeys point to Ainsdale and Birkdale as posters have advised. The frontage at Waterloo/Blundellsands/Hightown/Formby/Hillside (appears as Southport on Rightmove) might lure you.
Car journey: consider Maghull, Lydiate, Lunt, Sefton and Ince Blundell - all quite close to your daughter.
Do check online the area covered by free Merseytravel. Bordering towns and villages can be exempt.

Have a think about the Wirral. There's three branches of Merseyrail there: you might particularly consider places along the West Kirby branch that runs along the top. West Kirby itself is nice, very seasidey with a big sandy beach and lovely walks on the nearby sandstone heaths (great views of North Wales). Hoylake and Meols (pronounced "Mells", there's another Meols across the Mersey near Southport and that's pronounced "Meals" just to be awkward) have their merits too. Moreton less good maybe. If you're coming from the south coast then you should be right at home. It's a different kind of coast in some ways.

Easy access to Liverpool City Centre for shopping, culture and general debauchery, and of course to Crosby with a change of train at Moorfields (Central on the way back). Convenient for DD but detached enough not to be in each other's way.

I grew up on the Wirral and I can definitely confirm that it was a great place to be.

Hi, Birkdale and Ainsdale are nice (Birkdale a nicer village imho, but Ainsdale has a much better beach). Both have train stations and are only 15 mins from Crosby. And yes, all trains and busses are free to over 60s!
