OldFolksNet anyone?
I did come under fire once for assuming posters on GN must tend to be older people. Someone told me very firmly that grandparents could be in their thirties!
However, not everyone on GN is a parent or grandparent either ?
We've suggested alternative names before but there's never been a consensus.

Should men have their own “Gramps Net” ?

I love to read Micks “Good Morning “ thread, Mick is a Gentleman in every sense of the word.
I rarely engage with men on GN, I took exception to a couple of men who were very crude and misogynistic.
I feel it is most unusual for a man to join a predominantly female space.
If for example my husband said he wanted to become part of the GN community I would be very against him joining. .
I realise there could be many men on here that we assume to be women but would you post more freely or discuss more intimate matters if this were a female forum only?
Do you think men should have their own site?
This whole furore stems from the very first virtual cruise and it escalated, but I really can't see how it could have been avoided, even in the real world. The cruise was bound to meander into the realns of fine dining and the specialities of the region. Look at Viking's own pictures of that ferry cruise, if it isn't to your liking just quietly move on. But to derail the thread and to try to take over from the chef did seem a bit insulting. It's that kind of dogmatic approach which turns posters away or raises the hackles on others. ?
I'm well over it, but the fact that it keeps surfacing and needs explaining makes these GN threads hard work. Giving up is not in my nature, but I too am coming pretty close.
I suppose some people find it harder to deal with opinions that differ from their own than others, but it can be helpful to occasionally consider that they have given the matter just as much thought but have reached a different conclusion.
Well perhaps if people stopped resurrecting said thread Joseanne we could all move on. I am fed up hearing about it and I'm sure others are too.

Exactly.

Yep. Me too. I didn’t follow the thread, I don’t know what happened but I do know I want to move on.
Ah that's my dads type of music that is. Backdrop of my childhood.

It's hard because, the whole tone has changed since the pandemic
If we want it to stay, we would have to fight for it, all of us.
That means keeping threads on topic
Not allowing personal comments
Not engaging in an argument when it should be a discussion
I've watched so many leave. I think about leaving quite often and I see too many others saying the same
If we want it to stay we will have to fight for it
Hmm. I don't see how that works. GN is a commercial enterprise, so the only way to 'fight for it' is for us all to buy the items that we see advertised when browsing. They are showing me engagement rings just now, so that's not going to be happening
.
Keeping threads on topic is incidental to whether GN stays or goes. Advertisers just want threads to have maximum views, so that readers see the ads - they don't care what we are talking about, or how closely we stick to the point.
People's ideas of what constitute 'personal comments' seem to vary, too. Invoking the moral high ground tends to make you lose it. Someone saying 'I think X, as do all reasonable decent people' is the same as saying 'If you disagree with me you are unreasonable and offensive'. In other words, you don't have to actively call someone names to be personal - you can do it passively, too, and it's just as bad.
When does a discussion become an argument? If it is as soon as someone disagrees with something, then there would be no threads to keep on topic, with or without personal comments.
People are always threatening to leave. Usually they are expressing annoyance or discontent with whatever's going on, then they calm down and change their minds. Sometimes they do leave, but usually, when someone has been using a board for a long time it becomes part of their life, and they come back, either with the same name after a break, or with a different one.
When the nights get dark, the schools re-open and people have less to do, things will liven up - more so if everyone who has complained about things being quiet starts a thread of their own.
Thanks StarDreamer that was very apt!

What about all the intellectual property rights they claim they acquire from people posting?
Those could be worth a fortune.
Particularly if we have a thread where we write a screenplay for a movie.
That's true, too.
Fighting for it still doesn't involve not disagreeing etc though. Maybe we should all make up fascinating stories about our lives?

You can tell when people have bad intentions to dosrupt threads that aren't really about them
You think you can but you could be mistaken.
Maybe we should all make up fascinating stories about our lives?
I think that already happens!
Particularly if we have a thread where we write a screenplay for a movie
We've had several threads of stories wot we wrote ?

Where are they please?
I'm sorry, I don't know. The search facility might help but it's not the best.
I think they were done a long time ago StarDreamer, 7 or 8 years ago maybe? Each person wrote a bit of a story, always leaving their last sentence open, and the next person added to it etc.
I just mentioned them in passing, they were good fun but I wouldn't know where to look for them.
Some of you must know very odd men if all they talk about is football and cars innards .I've worked in an industry thats top heavy with men all my life and rarely came across men like that .
My OH can talk for Scotland would win awards for it.he'll chat about anything and everything and most of the men I know are the same .
They aren't aliens ,though some of the posts on GN would have you believe otherwise .
Of course men should be on here they have every right to their views just like us women .
I think some Gransnetters need to lighten up, male or female, take some comments on threads with a pinch of salt and a shrug.
It’s just chat, we don’t know each other, will (probably) never meet each other so why can’t we be objective and just enjoy the various topics without getting emotional?
Gransnet is not going downhill as far as I’m concerned, I really enjoy it and try not to get my knickers in a twist if someone strongly disagrees with me?
As for people leaving, often referred to as ‘flouncing’.
I love that word, it brings the exact picture to mind of what a ‘flounce’ is.
Well, some leave and never return.
Some leave, and then return with a different name.
A few threaten to leave, do so, but usually come back posting again.
GN seems to keep going, with or without the ‘leavers’ or ‘flouncers’, whichever you prefer to call them.

Good post ! And let’s stop using words like “clique “ “pile-on”, “flounce” “derail” …...please
I have a solution !
All we have to do is start interesting (doesn’t have to be too interesting- dish cloths and ‘how often do you clean the oven’ are fine) / engaging / supportive/ amusing threads.
We could have a rota maybe.
Just get stuck in and do it.
Thackeray said something like, ‘life is a mirror - frown at it and it frowns back; smile and it smiles back’
GN is a bit like that at the moment. It’s reflecting and magnifying all the negativity.
Agreed but without all the conditions….you can’t say that on that thread ….don’t argue…etc etc!
Trouble is I can’t think of anything…..
