I’m further down the east coast, and haven’t had a good buttery in years. They are all flat, hard and basically tasteless. That’s both prepacked ones in supermarkets (various brands) and loose ones from baker’s shops. Are the ones you enjoy from a particular place volver

Peterhead grannydarkhair. But I only get them when I go home, which isn't that often. The ones I had today were from a Co-op in Fife, they weren't too bad.

volver Thanks. It’s a bit far to pop to Peterhead just for a buttery ? I don’t shop in a Co-op very often, I used to have one very local to me, but need to take two buses to get to one nowadays. I’ll have a look next time I am in one.

The best butteries ever, IMO, were made by Smith's of Huntly, but sadly, they went out of business (Smith's, not butteries). We get JG Ross's ones now, from Tesco and they are not at all bad. When we got some in Dundee (also from Tesco) they were ok, but not nearly as good. I think perhaps they need to be made by Doric speakers to be really good.

Wheniwas Were the ones you got in Dundee from JGRoss? If they were, then I wonder why they weren’t as good as the ones you usually get? I have been craving a decent buttery since I last posted ?

Couldn't swear to it, grannydarkhair, but I'm pretty sure the Dundee ones were not Ross's. My DS managed to get some in a Tesco delivery (somewhere near Falkirk, but I don't know where the delivery came from) and they were Ross's and were just like the ones we get.

The Hairy Bikers had square sausages on one of their trips to Scotland and absolutely raved over it. My apologies for not being Scottish - I used to do a sword dance with two crossed pheasant tails on the floor when I was little so can I be honorary?

We are just about to have onion Lorne in rolls for lunch in morning rolls, I cannot wait!!!
The only thing is, I have lost my sense of taste. I hope I am not disappointed.

Thanks Marydoll that’s very generous as I’ve found most Scots to be. I’ve also looked up recipes for Lorne or square sausages so I reckon I could have a go at making my own.

I'm interested in a recipe too - there are a number online, quite different in ingredients, but as I've never had it I don't know what it should taste like. I really don't knowwhy I've never had though, I've spent enough time with family in the Borders and Edinburgh ?

We also have our own speciality - Glamorgan sausages

Waitrose sells McSween black pudding but it is not available all of the time.

Macsween do a very good black pudding and haggis both of which we slice and grill. Perfect on a morning roll, brown sauce is optional.

We always buy McSween haggis from Waitrose. Haven't seen the black pudding.

Black pudding flies off the shelf where I live.
