Help me with my maximum & minimum thermometer please..

I bought a maximum & minimum thermometer, the sort that has the tiny metal bits that sit above the liquid to record the highest/lowest temperatures. Well, my two metal bits seem to be stuck within the liquid, not on top of it. How do I rectify this? Pressing the reset button doesn't help as that's for dropping them back down to the liquid, not for raising them above it again. Can anyone help please?

I've just read that they're magnetic, I'm wondering if a magnet alongside will move them back up again?

They are magnetic, and I have moved ones that are stuck, in that way. But one stoutly resists all attempts, even with really strong magnets.
heating or freezing, within reason, sometimes works, but not always, to help free them.
