Hire/borrow a wheelchair

We borrowed one from the Red Cross years ago when DGD had her leg in plaster. I think you just make a donation when you return it.

I'm sure you can hire a wheelchair from the Red Cross. There are probably other places that do them too. There's shopmobility, but I don't know if you can hire them for more than one day, you'd have to ask. Good luck, and happy holidays ?.

Did you want advice on where to hire a wheelchair or how to get him to use one? Red Cross is the cheapest place to hire a chair although there are many firms that do it from about £12 per week. To get him to use it I would say it is for the benefit of the other people in your party as you do not want to hold them up on a walk.

Thanks all I’ve just checked the Red Cross and there is a centre 9 miles away but it’s only open 2 hrs on a Wednesday I’ll investigate hiring one nearer if possible first.

Red Cross for one. If you are visiting historic properties or gardens they often have one or two (ring ahead to check). Shopping Centres may have shopmobility schemes with wheelchairs and mobility scooters. The railway station in Hull has both as well. Windermere visitors centre has a couple.A lot of these are free.

We used the Red Cross - you can phone and book in the place you are going to.

Thanks ladies , Luckgirl I hadn’t thought about hiring at the place we are going Norfolk as it happens, I’ve just checked and we can pick it up within 2 miles of our destination so how good is that! Now to convince OH. ?

Glad you've solved your problem but you can buy a wheelchair for well under £100. Our Red Cross will only loan for a maximum of one month so we ended up buying one for about £65.

Hiring one at your destination does mean you don't need to transport it far in your car, though!

my local house clearance shop has a tonne of them for next to nothing. Prob cheaper than hiring (although wont be serviced or cleaned so need to check em over carfully)

Also don't forget Tanith a lot of places have mobility scooters available free of charge ( i.e National Trust places etc) so he can be a little in control himself too.

Tanith if you are a member of our local Nextdoor you may be able to get one for free from there

Sorry, that is wrong advice. I often offer and have picked up items from our local Freecycle. You can put it as a Wanted request and see what transpires. If you are not a member I can do it on your behalf.
