Any plumber types out there?

No nothing about plumbing but could it be air in the pipes? Possibly google the problem. (Think my DGS would love to hear that, probably call it a farting toilet!).

The last couple of times I have flushed my downstairs loo it has made a noise like a ships foghorn! If I run the cold water tap whilst the cistern is filling the noise stops. Anyone got any ideas what could be causing this?
