Does anyone have experience of Peritonea Dialysis

Hallo Serkeen I'm sorry to hear that your husband must have been pretty unwell to need this peritoneal dialysis. My only experience is as a District Nurse some years ago where we had several patients who managed to procedure very well at home with support from a specialist nurse although others had this in the dialysis unit. I am hoping that you will both get all the support and education/training you need from the Dialysis Team. Best wishes.

No doctor should mind answering questions - it is to the patient's benefit if everybody understands why treatments have been suggested and what the process will be. I have always believed that if you can build up a relationship with doctors or nurses by relevant questions and conversations then everyone is a winner. Sometimes the doctors are very busy and it may be that the nursing staff (who are also busy!) would be able to answer some of your queries. There may also be a specialist nurse who deals with patients undergoing peritoneal dialysis.

Peritoneal dialysis (PD) is a type of dialysis that uses the peritoneum in a person's abdomen as the membrane through which fluid and dissolved substances are exchanged with the blood. It is used to remove excess fluid, correct electrolyte problems, and remove toxins in those with kidney failure
(So you don't have a "peritonea" fitted.)

Don't be afraid to ask questions, in fact make a written note beforehand of things on your mind. Doctors, especially specialists are very happy to explain things and if you don't understand you must say so, so that they can keep you fully informed about what they are doing.

A relative had this for many years, he managed it at home, he had a sterile area set aside in a spare room to carry it out, I think he did it more than once a day, it was called a peritoneal wash out. He was scrupulous with his hygiene when carrying out the procedure to avoid any risk of infection and he seemed to cope very well. I remember that he had large stocks of the necessary fluids, tubes and equipment. I hope all goes well for you both, best wishes x
