I prefer to join a new ball of yarn at the start of a row rather than mid-point, the tails can then be worked into the edge rather than having a knot or a join that might detract from the pattern. I know it sometimes means wasting a few inches of yarn but I do prefer the finish that it achieved.

There is something call a Magic Knot but I've never tried it and I'm not sure I'd trust it even though it's recommended by many online crochet teachers.
I am new to crochet. Please can anyone tell me how to join 2 pieces of the same colour yarn (when the first has run out) - or point me towards a good video? At the moment I am just joining them with a knot which I'm pretty sure is not correct
