Making soap

Does anyone have a foolproof recipe for making soap, please? I fancy having a go at it for my home-made Christmas gift effort this year smile

My daughter had a chemistry set for Christmas, when she was young, and we decided to try and make soap, we had small 'sooty' specks for about three days afterwards, floating around the kitchen, but no soap, no idea what happened.
