do your GC still want to wear your handknits?

Berger de France (I think that's how it's spelt) has some lovely, trendy patterns DGSs seem to like them and wear them. Oh, and despite the name the patterns are in English.

I recall using their patterns when my daughter (now 52) was a baby. They were beautifully designed.

I used to knit a lot for my kids and the Grands but as soon as I notice things don't get worn much I stopped. Now I maybe knit if a new baby comes along but otherwise I dont knit at all.

I feel, whilst I do respect the right to hold opinions, this is a bit rude to the “knitter”, unless specific reasons are given.

Jumpers are always useful and I’d certainly wear a hand knitted jumper no and I’m 67!

I admit to not knitting - I can do the stitches and I think I can follow a pattern but the end result is rarely what I intended - but when my GD was expected I knitted a few simple baby sweaters. I was very pleased with them but I think I only saw one of them actually on my GD. I felt rather proud of my humble efforts but now I realise that GD's mum is a far better knitter and produces cables and fancy patterns so my little efforts were probably a bit simple... never mind, they gave me some pleasure.

My mum did a lot of knitting for the family and my late son would ask her to knit him at least one big jumper every year right up until he died. He said that they grew with each wash (they did!) and he and his friends loved them for their sloppy joe-appeal. He said that the last one had been stolen from a pub in Camden so someone else must have fancied one too...

I knitted for gc until a couple of years ago when they were under 5 but never saw them wear any of the items which took time and effort to make. I only saw them in sweat shirts and hoodies so gave up.

I loved knitting for my grandkids even before they were born, baby blankets cardigans etc but sadly my last knit for my grandaughter 8 years I think was hardly worn although she did say she loved it. I've started crocheting for myself now making a granny square cardigan and hexis trying to give some to my daughter now because they are growing in my cupboard😀

I used to machine knit but had to give up. They love my crochet blankets and cushions though.

I think it depends what you knit. DD still knits for all the family but usually at the direct request of a family member for a specific item. I have several sweaters she has knitted, as do her DB and SSiL

DS wears what we used to describe as pullovers, and is getting a reputation for having a wardrobe of unusual ones.

I stopped knitting for the Gdcs when they were still little - the other granny was/is better at lovely jumpers and cardis, and still is, but IMO the two elder (11 and nearly 10) mostly prefer ‘shop’ clothes now. GDd1 loves her White Fox hoodie, which was a hand me down from a neighbour.

I had to find another outlet for my knitting, so thank goodness for Knit for Nowt (discovered during the first lockdown) where the items are very much wanted and needed.

What is Knit for Nowt please . Could you explain about it . My granddaughters are teenagers now, don’t like hand knits but would like to knit for somewhere that might appreciate it

Have a look at the website, Knit for Nowt. If you click on ‘galleries’ on the home page, there are pics of all the items made.
I don’t think any new knitters/crocheters/sewers are being taken on at the moment, though - it’s largely a one-woman (unpaid) show, and she’s got as much as she can handle - there is always a long waiting list (of children’s therapists) for the items, which are so much valued and appreciated.

An alternative is Knit for Peace. Before I started making for KfN I used to make scarves and little teddies for them.

The only hand knit my GC ever wore was a bolero I made for the oldest GD. the yarn knitted up to look like fur fabric. My MiL used old patterns and knitted my DD a sweater that made her look like one of the Fossils in Ballet Shoes.

Hand knits are much in demand in our family.
I hate knitting but my mum, nearly 98, knits for her ggs’s&d.
She uses the same pattern ( in various sizes) but the different colours make them all look unique.
I wish she would knit for me but she says she may not have time to finish it 😂. She only goes up to about age 10.

DD was out buying knitting wool today to knit the sweater her 19 year old niece has asked her to knit.

As children (back in the Dark Ages) we had hand knitted angora boleros to wear with party dresses. My party dress was usually a hand me down from fatter cousins, though, so I wasn’t usually mad keen.

I used to go to a couple of knitting groups both with around 16-20 members. Most people were knitting for friends and family.

My close friend has children and grandchildren ranging from pre schoolers to young adults. She is constantly getting requests from them for all sorts of stuff like socks, baby items, jumpers, throws, Xmas sweaters, scarves etc. The trick is to choose great colours, current patterns and lovely yarns.

I don’t knit but sewed most of my children’s clothes. That was before supermarkets sold clothes cheaper than you could make them at home.
I carried on until they said No. From about 10 or 11 they want what their friends have, with the right labels.
I never made clothes for my grandchildren, I knew their mothers preferred choosing their clothes themselves.

I knit a lot, it stops me from nibbling while watching tv. When they were little, the GSs used to be fine with Granny knits, and the elder one, now 22, still really likes the one I made recently. I only knit with really good wool, it's expensive but worth it.
DD has got several jumpers that I made. And a sister (ex-musician with Dupuytrien's contracture) begs for close-fitting silk/cotton fingerless gloves, really fiddly to knit on four old size 12 needles.
