Holidays into the unknown ;)

Some folk just want to go somewhere with good weather, good facilities, good food and relax. If the weather, food etc is bad then they'll likely be disappointed and grumble. Others enjoy exploring and supposedly integrating with the locals, come back and bore you to death about their cultural experiences. I don't judge either. Makes a change from the usual grumbles here, the local weather and the ferries.

It applies to some people. I do think it's rude to visit places, knowing nothing about them or the native people, and to grumble about it afterwards.
Maybe you haven't come across anyone who does this. I have.

I'm reminded of a story my father likes to tell about a colleague of his. She is Spanish (from Spain) and her English is very good, but she does retain her Spanish accent. Someone once told her she had an interesting accent and asked about her origins. She replied that she is from Spain. The man then replied that he thought she was from Europe.

She said she was completely nonplussed and had no idea how to respond.

I know people who are happy not to leave the resort at all during their stay. They just sit by the pool all day and tuck into all inclusive food (as long as it’s not ‘foreign’!)and drink. They couldn’t find the country on a map

We had two lovely and very interesting holidays booked at the last minute - we knew the island but not the destination or accommodation.
Both really interesting holidays. Nor did we grumble.

I also love to do my research on holidays. I wouldn’t dream of not checking out things to see and do, local events taking place, restaurants,shopping etc.

We do have one place that is a firm favourite and I am on a couple of Facebook groups for this country. It amazes me the posts I see saying they’ve booked such and such a resorts and looking for what there is to do. One today had even booked a hotel asking if there is much to do there. It really beggars belief IMO. It’s also lazy.

I do like to research where we're going but a couple of times we booked last-minute holidays and only knew which island we were heading for.

If I decide where we are going, it’s because I have googled and/or been recommended, or it’s on my bucket list.

It is fun to go somewhere, somebody else has done the research on. As long as I know what to pack, I treat it as an adventure…

I absolutely love planning the travel! I can spend hours on Google maps checking out the area around where we will stay, looking at restaurants, museums and other attractions.

It amazes me a bit to hear about people like Grammaretto wrote about. I think those are the type of people that complain they can't understand the money, or that they can't get 'decent' food like at home.

By the way, If It's Tuesday, This Must be Belgium was a 1969 comedy based on a tour guide taking a group of Americans on a guided European tour. I think it's quite amusing, if I remember correctly.

I'm the same. I like to plan everything down to the last detail and I do a lot of research before I book anything.

Absolutely agree with this. What’s the point of going anywhere if you don’t know anything about it.

Completely agree Grammaretto. I always do a lot of research of the local area and beyond, transport links etc before even booking. Whereas DH usually asks the day before where we're off to.

When I was a teenager I worked with middle aged woman who told me she was going on holiday, and named the place.
I’d never heard of it, and asked her where it was.
She replied
“ I don’t know, but it takes 4 hours to get there”
She didn’t have the foggiest idea where she was going 😵‍💫

We used to travel using "The Rough Guide to" books as reference.

Well yes, if you're going online to google transport or nearbuy restaurants (maybe others don't do this?) I would think you could do a quick Google maps search on whereabouts you are - you could be 10 miles from the Alhambra or Florence etc & not visit because you were in ignorance - but it depends what you want form a holiday, & also I guess, she may be travelling with others who are very clued up about the region.

I have a relative who is guity as charged as well.
She says, "well the pilot knows where he is going, so that is good enough for me".

Guilty as charged.

I am going away with youngest son and family winter of 2027, no idea where other than it’s near the arctic circle (could be within it) and going to be cold.
