AIBU….to think that clingfilm has become too clingy?

My usual Sainsburys roll of clingfilm is so clingy that it clings to itself so badly that I struggle to unroll it ….. and the far end refuses to unroll at all. After several attempts, I gave up and bought a Tesco one. Although not as self-adhesive as the Sainsbury’s one, it still refuses to unroll fully ……
Having just spent 10 minutes trying with a pointed knife to prise the congealed end of roll apart, and stabbing myself in the thumb as a reward ….much blood demonstrating my heroic efforts …. I have given up.
I have many years of successful clingfilm unrolling to be proud of ….. but I am beaten ?

I rarely use clingfilm either, just silicon lids and glass bowls. I do have a Lakeland dispenser for clingfilm and foil because I got fed up with wrestling with the clingfilm, and they're brilliant, but it must be two or three years since I bought any refills. The glass bowls do add to the washing up though.

I've managed without clingfilm for years .Horrible ,frustrating stuff and yet more plastic that can't be recycled.I use beeswax wraps, multiple containers, various lids for various bowls and today took my picnic sandwich in a paper sandwich bag.I don't miss wrestling it off the roll .

Those little tabs in either end that are meant to keep the roll in place, why not just provide a roll that can stick out either end of the box?
And something to slip under the end!
Although I usually cut some cardboard to keep at the end of it to keep it from sticking down on itself.
Oopsadaisy1, you must have a large enough kitchen to keep all those tupperware in!

I have tried them all and now only buy Co-op cling film. I also keep it in the fridge.

I use the Lakeland ready to tear as it already serated ready to use. I try not to use anymore cling film than necessary anyway

I’ve never made peace with clingfilm, I hate it with a passion. grin I have some in the house, because Dh uses it but I don’t use it. I prefer a storage container or a silicon lid or a plate on top.

Or just use good old Tin Foil smile

That is just as bad as cling film. Aluminium is very demanding on the earth's resources to make. It's not a good thing at all.

I stopped using clingfilm five years ago and so should you! It's one of the most difficult things to recycle and takes thousands of years to disappear from landfill. Please do the earth a favour and do what my mother used to do - put a plate on top, or use silicon lids. I am in despair when I see TV chefs continue to use it.

Please don’t use any plastic wrap - it’s terrible for the environment
There are plenty of alternatives- you surely must of heard of the issues it causes ?

We have used a Bacofoil dispenser and even though it is plastic we must have had jt at least 5 years. We have one for kitchen foil as well and just buy refills. You can find them at the larger supermarkets.x

I hate clingfilm!

Silicone lids and plates work fine for me. Plastic molecules can get into your food from clingfilm. It’s more expensive than the greener alternatives, too.

I'm with Maggiemaybe - I haven't used clingwrap in years and I don't miss it all. I use elasticised fabric bowl covers (made them myself); silicone lids (bought from Ikea) and I do also have beeswax wraps. When all else fails, I use foil (not often). For microwaving food, I have just float a paper towel on top of whatever it is I'm cooking or reheating. Works just as well.

When I cut moisturiser tubes open, I fold the half tube in half or squash it, so that it fits into the bit that I've cut off - in other words a make shift new "lid" and usually it is used up in a few days or a week at most, so it doesn't dry out.

Me too! I also got a 'key' from the Body Shop to get maximum contents from tubes too..

Don't know if anyone else has commented but,I keep it in the fridge. Strangely makes it easier to unroll. But still does its job .

Bazza Tue 31-May-22 17:43:26

I stopped using clingfilm some time ago. I couldn’t get on with the beeswax covers, too stiff, so I now use a very thin wrapping foil from Aldi or Lidl which at least is recyclable. And it’s so easy to tear, no box or perforation needed.

grandtanteJE65 Tue 31-May-22 15:07:57

I have a feeling that cling-film doesn't "keep" very well and that if you get a roll that has been on the shelf too long, it is murder to unroll.

But this could just be may aging fingers loosing strenght I suppose.

What baffles me about cling-film is, when I finally get it off the roll it sticks to itself, but obstinately refuses to seal the dish or plate I am attempting to cover!

Why in an age where we are trying to limit waste in the interests of the environment, are we still using the blasted stuff? Air -tight fridge dishes exist after all.

Do uou know clingfilm should alwsys be torn back on itself. Of course you have to get the edge first to do this. I do crumple a small edge at tge end of the roll once Ive tirn a but away. Gives something to grip. To tear: if righthanded eg, hold roll upright in left hand with edge of film nearest you. Pull film back and down towards you. Should tear easily. Or buy a dispenser.

Doglessfornow Tue 31-May-22 14:16:02

Poor you! I had the same problem until I bought
Lakeland cling film, it’s slightly thicker and doesn’t cling to the roll as much, although it still does the job! Wort the extra pence!

HazelGreen Tue 31-May-22 13:38:47

I cut a new roll of clingfilm in two using a serrated knife. I find the smaller rolls easier to manage and a useful width.

homefarm Tue 31-May-22 13:21:49

Not as clingy as the original stuff was. Who can forget Katy Boyle and her advert 'tight as a drum'!

nadateturbe Tue 31-May-22 13:11:35

I keep it in the fridge.

kazzer Tue 31-May-22 12:57:50

Thought I was the only one! Packaging a nightmare too!

Aepgirl Tue 31-May-22 12:51:43

I think it’s all because it has less plastic in it now - goodness knows what it’s made from, but it certainly puts up a fight when trying to get it out of the box. Also I have found that the box is less robust and bends in the middle
