Celebrities seeming to promote gambling

I would also ban gambling adverts because I think they lure people in by making it appear exciting and daring. Think of the old time smoking adverts! The very fact that something is fronted by a so called celebrity would put me off it.

I hate to see any of them promoting funeral plans or equity release.
It does particularly rile me when some actor whose voice I recognise (unless I’m very much mistaken, Kevin Whately, aka Inspector Morse’s Lewis is one such) refers to whatever business it is as ‘we’ - as if he were a bona fide employee, not simply someone presumably amply paid for doing the voice over.

My long dead and born in the 19th century grandmother used to say “A gambler is worse than a drinker and he’s bad enough”. Her premise was that a drinker can only drink a finite amount whereas a gambler can keep going until everything’s gone. Sound Victorian advice! ?

If you report them, they are sometimes removed as the celebrities don't always realise they are being used to promote them!

Gambling is glamourised but losing is never shown. They don't tell us how many losing lottery tickets were bought to subsidise the one lucky winner.

We should never, ever have allowed gambling to take such a hold in this country or allowed it to be televised let alone advertised. Often it is the poor who get hooked in an attempt to find a way out of their poverty.

My dad used to say, "Why do you think that most bookmakers are in the poorer part of town, not in the well-to-do areas? Because they're selling a dream."

Duju I totally agree with you, why is gambling being promoted. In my opinion it should be stopped completely on the TV. Alcohol was stopped and this is another addiction that can bring terrible misery to families I just don't understand it.
Many years ago I had a boy friend who gambled, I wasn't really aware of the dangers until one Saturday he took me to visit his parents. and
I heard him say to his mother that he had run out of money(he had only been paid the day before)and could she give him some money as he had a dead cert for the next race. His mother gave him £10 when I spoke to him about this he told me he had spent all his money on gambling.

Let people watch what they like, play what they like, drink what they like so long as they do it responsibly and dont break the law and what they do is legal.
Why object to advertising just because you do not like celebrities appearing in it, if people are that easily led then tough, why should they stop advertising to the majority just because the minority have no self control, because in the end that is what it boils down too.

because gambling breaks people, breaks families, breaks children. Because it is so addictive and cause 'lack of self control' that is so damaging for innocents.

The other adverts promoted by celebrities, such as equity release, funeral plans etc aimed at the elderly also annoy me very much.
They are also a form of gambling; my MIL took one out with a firm still advertised by Carol Vordermann; she must have paid in three times as much over the years as the policy paid out after her death.
