Something that annoys me.

I have a French first name which was never pronounced properly so it is shortened and for years that is what everyone calls me , most people assume it’s short for a more common name as it’s quite unusual. My surname before marriage could be spelt two ways so as always asked which one did I mean. My married surname was only 4 letters but had the same last 2 so spent years saying to people it’s 2 ( letter) and often spelt with 1. Names are a minefield . Daughters names and surnames have also caused them problems even though different from mine, you can’t win really.

Can spell mine the Irish way with an L or two EEs and L.
Years ago I was on holiday with my cousin in devon, we met to Australian lads who were over here working.When they asked our name my cousin gave her name and when I told them mine they fell about. ?

My last name has over 100 variants which make genealogy a battle and is definitely a name that has to be spelt out. This is quite apt!

I might correct people but I'd rather not waste my time as they're bound to do it again....and again...the exception being businesses or finance where it does matter.
Someone once wrote my name down as Rita. Now, I wouldn't mind the name if it was mine but it isn't. Not even my middle name.
My moniker (and my real name) Gabriella is sometimes misspelled on here but we can all get a bit careless at times however, I always spell out my surname after saying it and the numbers of people who DON'T pay attention and still send out mail with it spelled the way (in their tiny minds) that they think it should be spelled, are legion.
When I ring to correct them, the response is nearly always 'Oh, I thought...' and I say, 'Perhaps you didn't think. I actually spelled it out for you yet you spelled it the way you wanted to.'

My surname is pronounced exactly the way it's spelt, never used to have a problem, and yet in the last few years, people on the phone, receptionists etc seem to all mis-pronounce it the same way. I repress the urge to say 'No, if that were my name it would be spelt....'

I taught a lovely 9 year old named Kim. We wrote letters to the BBC about a schools radio programme. When a reply arrived addressed to Miss Kim Surname a response was quickly written without any prompting from me.
It explained that boys had the name first and referred to Rudyard Kipling's book, good for him, I hope he went far!

My name can be spelt ending in e but isn't, it infuriates me because I always spell it out

Haha- it annoys me when its other way around! I dont have an E on end but if i give my name (on phone or for a form for example)everyone always seems to assume it is with the E-and i have to go to bother of saying its without! funny how different things bother different people!

My surname is also often a forename. I often get called by my surname when people think it is my Christian name. My surname is also sometimes spelled with an e. I don’t have one but, it quite often appears, even after I have said it does not have one. I don’t complain though - easy to make a mistake.

I have a french way of spelling my middle name and so usually leave it out of things if i can as no one says it right and you wouldnt believe the many ways ive had my surname pronounced (mostly call centres in different countries) even though its not really unusual& is same as a previous prime minister and a leading actor!

My son in law has a surname which is often used as a first name- in fact everyone calls him by this to the point where everyone who meets him does think its his first name(then look blank if he gives his surname as they must think hes got 2 the same! and when his mum says his real first name it takes a while to realise who shes on about! My daughter only calls him it if hes in trouble

A friend has a foreign version of a very similar English name and takes offence when it's spelt wrongly (which it usually is). I'm so frightened of getting it wrong I double and treble check before I send anything! She knows after all these years I know the right spelling, and could make excuses for my advancing years, but she wouldn't!

My surname is similar to a county, quite often people make a vague guess at any county!

My first name can be spelt several different ways, I used to get annoyed but frankly life is far too short for that.

Loved the Michael McIntyre YouTube clip earlier, putting it all into perspective. But I do realise the importance of correct names in legal documents and do a lot of double checking then! ?

My forename can be pronounced in two different ways. I have given up correcting people and answer to either.

My husband is Jonathan. He says his friends call him Jonathan. The neighbours always calls him Jon. Variations on his spelling can be Jonathon. Johnathan. Jonothen. Our daughter is Jemma. With a J. You can imagine what happens with her name.

A John I know has some friends who refer to him as Jonathan. I can't imagine why!

My annoyance is with my surname, it is very easy to spell and pronounce but STILL people get it wrong!!!!

I also have a grievance with my title, some people assume that now I'm divorced I'm a MS; I absolutely detest that version of a title for a female, I am a MRS and always will be!

My first name is Nicolette. On my work emails my name is printed at the bottom but professionals ( mainly solicitors) reply to Nicole, Colette etc. I do think it’s rude and lazy as my name’s in black and white for them to see.

My mother-in-law still writes cards to Nicholette after 27 years, as does her sister! I don’t think I’ve ever known anyone with their name spelt that way.

But the worst ‘crime’ is people who call me Nic/Nick. I have never been called Nic and don’t want to be. I personally call people by the name they’re introduced as, I’d never shorten it unless they asked me to. I know in the whole scheme of things it’s not important, but I do feel it’s impolite to not bother learning someone’s name correctly.

But on a lighter note, spellcheck does have a habit of changing my name to Niggled, so I do have to be careful!

I feel your pain
. When my daughter was born the hospital asked if I had a name for her yes I said it’s Alicia (A-li-see-a). Oh don’t you mean A-li-sh-a they said. No I said and they insisted on their way. No, no and again NO!!!!!!

My name also gets mis-spelt. It just doesn’t look right, and is a bit irritating - especially if it’s family members who do it!

My forename is an unusual one , I have never met anyone with it . My Mum called me by her Grandmothers surname (thank you Mum ) and I have only once talked on the phone to someone whose surname was my forename . Sadly it is almost the same as certain ( in the news at the moment) Northern Ireland female Politition , I have given up correcting people , but it does make my teeth scringe

No real problem with my first name Hazel but Spanish people in particular seem to have a problem with it. I ended up in hospital there and they insisted on calling me by my second name (which I hate) as they did not recognise Hazel. They wondered why I kept ignoring them! My surname is German (first two KN) but we have to spell it out using the phonetic alphabet (found it focuses the mind) before we even pronounce it. To say it first results in hilarious versions with often people having to put an A after the K. Waiting to be called in waiting rooms is a problem. We have sat there and ignored an impossible version with loads more letters added but then found it is us. I am researching my family tree and, for curiosity sake, I searched for our marriage certificate to find it had been indexed incorrectly with the name being spelt wrong (dreaded 'a' put in after the K but mysteriously another a and a letter not even in the name added!). To cap it all, my husband's name, which can have one or two n's, only had one in the index.
