April Book- Almost English

Oddly enough I have just finished Almost English, which I had picked up at the village book swap.

My copy has just arrived, thanks Gransnet, I will start it when I have finished Burial Rites.

I have not had the best of weeks however when my copy of Almost English arrived on my doormat this morning it cheered me up no end.Thank you.

Absolutely Von-derfool! I have never read any of Charlotte Mendelsons books before - but I will definitely be doing so now.
The descriptions of the "Oldies" are so entertaining and so vivid - i can see them now!
I have no questions, but just want to say that I found the book hugely entertaining, as well as giving a little insight into the "Hungarian way"

Lovely! I've only just started it but I think I'm going to enjoy it. It reminds me rather of Barbara Hulanicki's description of life with her mad aunt.

I have just finished " Almost English ", sorry but I found the book just didn't flow right, it was overwritten and disjointed. Maybe I need to reread it at some point.

I read my copy last weekend. To be honest, I found Marina's behaviour barely credible and most of the time I wanted to tell her mother to stop being so wet, but despite that I still got enough enjoyment out of it to make it a worthwhile read.

I have to agree with matson,sadly Almost English did seem disjointed and I found it difficult to finish the book as I was not really enjoying it.The characters were well drawn but did not capture my imagination.

I found it hard to start with and couldn't get into it but with every turned page it became harder to put it down I loved the discriptions of the older ladies and their ways they where facinating in the end,a really good read which was worth while persevering with.Thanks GN.

I have only just started it and am struggling a bit because I was thinking the focus would be on the girl. I am sure I will enjoy it if I persevere which I will do.
