Change of Name

Your profile still remains on view when you change your name unless, I suppose, you change the settings yourself. Mine is still there and also others who have gone black now, are still blue on the old threads.

Tried changing my old settings but it wouldn't let me, because of course now I'm no longer Anagram. I think I was confused because some former member names are now black although their new names are blue...[headache emoticon]!

Can I say that I was openly accused of being a multiple identity G.N. recently and the thread was removed. If you look at Site Stuff, 'It is ridiculous how', you will see Geraldine states that "We do have ways of knowing if two posters are the same person". Unless I am being stupid and should not beleive her then all this talk of multiple identity on G.N. is based on some G.N.'s paranoia or their belief if anyone has a view other than theirs they must be some sort of covert poster.

There is a difference in simply changing your forum name (and letting us know) and posting under two different names simultaneously, with one persona supporting the other on controversial matters. That is just dishonest and disingenuous. I am glad no member has stooped to that,
or pretending to be a new member entirely. (Jingle is allowed her many identities as she can never resist the urge to tell us about it! )

In real life I use my maiden name but can, perfectly legally, use what constitutes my married name. (Actually, I think it is quite legal to call yourself anything you like providing you are not doing it for criminal purposes.) If I set up an e-mail account as A. Single and another one as A. Married with completely different addresses, would it be possible to identify two different forum names connected to these as belonging to the same person? What if I were using two different computers as well?

I hasten to add that I am doing neither of these things. There's only one absentgrana.

My name for the last 32 years is one I chose myself after my divorce. I didn't like either my married or single name.
I spend so much time on here as Greatnan that I just wouldn't have time to post as somebody else as well!

I don't understand why anyone would keep changing their name but I can understand why someone might want to become anonymous. Probably the same reasons some people have always had no profile and don't give away anything which might identify them. If anyone has done that then I think it would be very unkind for anyone to 'out' them.

I don't think anyone has suggested 'outing' anybody. Once you have recognised somebody's style you just know with whom you are dealing. Aren't we all anonymous anyway, unless we choose to tell other members our real names, (e.g. to become Facebook friends)?

It takes me long enough to post something written without any errors under one name never mind two.

Greatnan Its not just that I can't spell but I have trouble typing and writing correctly and this is very slow. My proof reading is bad. I tend to "hear" what I have written rather than easily see the spelling of words. (My head can spell but my hand doesn't always write the correct letters in order.) It ruined my education with really poor O level marks but I was always in the top stream. Basically I was thought lazy about writing and spelling.
At the age of 50 when doing an OU course I spoke about these spelling/writing issues and was offered an assessment which diagnosed a degree of dyslexia. I have problems with visual memory and other such coordination things. It was quite a relief to discover I wasn't just thick.
Sob story over! I won't be making money out of "My miserable school years" in"Pick Me Up" magazine.

Thanks, POGS - I must admit that it was partly because of your experience that I made a point of being as open as possible about my change of name, although even if I'd said nothing it would have been obvious that it was me (nice line in waffle, annoying tendency to stick oar in...! ).

Nelliemoser - yes, what you describe does sound like classic dyslexia. You were lucky to be in an enlightened school which realised it has nothing to do with intelligence. My daughter was not - she was put in the bottom streams at comprehensive schools and resort to arguing with the teachers and disrupting lessons because she was so bored.
I wonder if it would help if you did actually record your words and play them back before you typed them?
I have a photographic memory for words but my typing is too fast for my computer so I make typos, which Spellcheck usually corrects.

Ana - I think your recent posts have been models of common sense, but it is nice of you to let us know about your change.

Now this will confuse you nellie it's nellie here..no I am not talking to my self,are we aright pair of nellies .
The dyslexia that you describe and also by greatnan is exactly the problem my lovely OH has,it is so much more than a learning disability,as it affects memory ,coordination self esteem ,and lifestyle,career etc.
There is an app on I pad or that can be bought to go on pc or laptop it is the Dragon that * gramps has referred to it is voice recognition/activated and is a big help to sufferers.
I also think as I type greatnan as my thoughts go faster so does my typingxxx

For good reasons I feel I need to change my username (when I can think of another.) I don't think I have upset enough people yet to need to hide my ID though.
I have seen Ana's comments on this topic. Has it all been sorted now Ana and did you just post your decision to change on this thread?

Nellie, you need to email GNHQ at [email protected]. I wanted to shorten mine to 'baubles' however it would have meant re-doing my profile and I just couldn't be bothered.

I asked GNHQ if it would be OK if I shortened my user name (it used to be Anagram), and although they aren't generally keen on name changes, as it was so similar and I wasn't deliberately trying to confuse or deceive anyone they allowed it. The only thing I hadn't realised was that my old profile would still be viewable, but as there isn't much on it, it doesn't matter!

If you have a good reason for wishing to change your user name, I would contact GNHQ (see 'contact us' at the bottom of the page). The only other way is to resign your membership and rejoin under a new name (apparently! )

Greatnan I have developed a technique when writing by hand to reduce mistakes. I have to concentrate completely and to think carefully about each letter of a word as I write it which is very time consuming. My handwriting is better if I don't try to do joined up writing. I word process everything else as it gives a chance to correct stuff.

I could always read aloud ok though, we learnt phonetics in 1953, but when I came to do the Dyslexia assessment I discovered that I could not remember a lot of the details I had just read.

Thank's for thought on name change. I think I have overused this user name elsewhere.
