Wuthering Heights 1939 version.

I find it pretty true to Bronte's novel (well, as true as any Hollywood version can be).

Laurence Olivier, what could be better.

I've yet to see (and can't imagine) a film version of WH that can capture the book. I thought it was really romantic when I read it at about 15, but I reread it as an adult and had a very different perspective. It would be very difficult to film it, as so much of what happens is in the reader's head.

I’m going to watch it soon.

My ex husband is quite obsessed with the book. He even walked to the rocky outcrop that is supposed to be part of its setting. I love the film and don’t think later adaptations have ever bettered it.

Oh, my favourite book. Such passion. Wonderful.

I read the book at 16 and loved it. Heathcliffe was of his time, he was a tormented soul, cruel, but I was incredibly attracted to the character.
I watched the film with Timothy Dalton as Heathcliffe. I loved it.
When younger I loved good looking bad boys but as I have got older and a bit wiser, I now cannot be a.... with them and can see through them. I cannot see Laurence Olivier as Heathcliffe.

Loved this book and read it when I was about 11/12. Decided then that if I ever had a daughter her name would be Cathy. My Cathy is now 62. Oh! How I cried when Cathy died and Heathcliffe begged her to haunt him but never leave him. Yes Laurence Olivier was not physically as described but a magnificent actor. Merle Oberon was lovely although Laurence Olivier wanted Vivian Leigh (his wife ) to be Cathy. Her compensation was Scarlett O’Hara in Gone With The Wind. I will be watching the film as it encapsulates the spirit of the book.

Not a Laurence Olivier fan tbh, bit too neat... but has anyone seen the Cliff Richard version? That was a challenge to the imagination... 🤣

I’d like to watch the Tom Hardy version even though it hasn’t had good reviews. I’ve been a fan of Toms ever since I saw him in the series The Virgin Queen.

I like to think I ‘discovered’ Tom Hardy when I saw him in The Virgin Queen. There was another higher profile series about Elizabeth I at the time so it was largely ignored but I raved about Tom at the time. I’ve got it on dvd somewhere and must rewatch it.

Ralph Fiennes is my Heathcliff.

I seem to remember a television version (in the 60s?) with Keith Michell as Heathcliffe. He was very good with a very threatening presence.

And was it Olivia de Havilland who played Cathy? Another mis cast actor for the part anyway, whoever it was.
