Beecham House-ITV.

I missed the first 10 minutes EllanVannin so I had to guess at the opening. I think I'm going to enjoy it, but wont see tonight's episode as I have childcare and watching TV is impossible.

I loved the costumes too. Was that Mrs Patmore (Downton Abbey) playing the mother?

Yes it was gillybob. I'm not sure what to make of the series so far. I'll keep watching though. I love programmes about India. They're mostly about the Raj era so this is a bit different.

I enjoyed the spectacle, costumes etc. although the house did look rather like a luxury hotel; I don't think they went in for pointy cushions on the beds in the eighteenth century. The dialogue seemed rather stilted but fully intend to watch further episodes. Were there echoes of 'The Good, the Bad and the Ugly 'theme tune in the opening shots of the hero?

I think Mother Beecham brought Violet along for the journey on a promise that she would matchmake between her and her son. Possibly even a hint of marriage.

I like the almost comedic comments of (I think it was) the cook and the other servant.

We missed the first ten minutes too - Antiques Road Show ran over and we didn't realise.

It seemed rather slow but I hope it will develop as it looks promising.

I really enjoyed it I loved the costumes and scenary am waiting for tonights episode hoping it will be as good.

I agree that the costumes and scenery are wonderful but we found some of the dialogue and acting a bit stilted in places. Also, I find Beecham’s outfit a bit too wild west for me, though I assume it is true to the period and place. Will give it another week.

I think Violet will end up " shrinking ". Oh dear, I don't think she's going to be very lucky with John Beecham.

Am looking forward to watching this. Luckily I recorded both Antiques Roadshow, and Gentleman Jim, as I was binge watching Thirteen!!! and having a lovely lazy afternoon and evening.

I doubt it, directors rarely care whether the costumes are accurate, just that they support their concept of the production.

I haven't watched it, I watch very little tv, but if you want to know what house is being used for Beecham House it is Sezincote, near Moreton-in-the-Marsh, Gloucestershire. We visited it last summer and the production team were there assessing it.

I didn’t like it. Not sure why, but I thought it seemed very artificial, and everyone was far too clean and tidy in their beautiful but unrealistic costumes. Acting was poor, but what can be done with such a script? I shan’t be watching the rest.

I do not think directors are remotely interested in producing costume dramas that are realistic anymore.

Obviously books need to be adapted and new productions must meet modern expectations on costume and manners. But now most costume dramas, should be filed under fantasy, as their contact with the realities of the period they are meant to be set in gets more and more tenuous.

I used to love costume dramas, but stopped watching them after the last version of Pride and Prejudice.

I thought it was slow as well Callistemon and not quite believable. It's best not to judge on the first episode though,I will see what tonight brings.

I was looking forward to it but can only say that it was dull and abysmal. Costumes ok but not gripping in story of characterisation. We won't bother again. After one episode we should care about the people and be keen to follow their stories, sorry.

I think it is supposed to be based on a true story that someone has researched in their family history M0nica and sodapop!

I did learn about the East India Company at school but can remember very little about it; perhaps I need to research it so that I know something of what's going on.
DH tells me that it is on again this evening!

Oh dear! Very disappointing - the main character is so wooden I gave up before the end!

I'm not enjoying it either - probably soldier on for another episode.

I thought it was dire, which is such a pity given the beautiful settings and costumes. I am also getting fed up with Gentlemen Jack. It is so slow and seems to draw out every plot.

Was really looking forward to watching this,
Fell asleep (with boredom ? ) before the end.

Disappointing.

The only character worth watching is the gorgeous baby boy who apparently is played by identical twin girls.

I enjoyed the lovely gurgling baby noises!
Have yet to watch episode 2.

They could all do with taking some Beechams to liven them all up. It was beginning to seem like Acorn Antiques with all the pauses as though they'd forgotten their words.
Not as bowel-gripping as I thought it would be
