Calling all footy grans ... Who are you ...who do you support? How much does it matter?

I'm a Spurs girl and loving their growing confidence and good form after many years of heartache. Football is important to my sons and I taught my GS to say 'goal!' very early on grin.

Can hardly believe I manage to stay married to an Arse oops Arsenal supporter ... It is a tough job!!!

Greyduster Sun 15-Oct-17 07:18:56

We are a footie household, imp though personally I would sooner gouge out my eyes with a rusty spoon than watch football. The men support two teams here in the city which is awkward. The aftermath of a recent derby match caused some tensions. We regularly turn out to watch GS play for his junior team. That I do enjoy.

Imperfect27 Sun 15-Oct-17 07:30:06

Ha ha Greyduster- you paint a vivid picture! Both DS' girlfriends do NOT share their passion for the 'beautiful game' and I feel the importance of it is like a 'slow reveal' to them as seasons unfold and significant matches come along.

Recently my DH and DS2 were discussing how thoughtless it is of anyone to plan their wedding on FA Cup Final Day / End of Season match day / World Cup match days... Now for me, that is a bridge too far and I could see the utter bewilderment on DS2's partner's face as the discussion reached 'height of indignation' territory.

Yes, SURELY a family wedding would be more important ...SURELY ...

My family are Preston North End supporters. When I was growing up we could hear the roar of the crowd from our house.
My teacher training college was on White Heart Lane and I still take an interest on how Spurs get on Imp.

Imperfect27 Sun 15-Oct-17 08:16:02

Hi Nana. My dad was a season ticket holder for Spurs and took me from age 6 from time to time.
Eight years ago, my dad first met my DH, just a few months before he died from lung cancer. I introduced my 'new an' with an added apology ... 'Don't like to tell, you this dad, but he is an Arsenal supporter. They had just that moment warmly shaken hands. My dad struggled up out of his chair and with a mock scowl, pointed to the front door and said 'Get out!'

Apart from DD1 and I, the whole of our family were/are fanatical Nottingham Forest supporters (somewhat frustrated ones currently!) All 5 of them went regularly and DD2 even organised a supporters group when she moved to London.

Life moves on though and all 3 daughters are married to people with different allegiances though we have, thankfully, managed to lose the Leicester City supporter - another thing we had against the Idiot! grin DH and DS1 still have season tickets.

Aged 12, DS2 was invited to train with Leicester City Youth Team, as it was then, but it was taking a lot of time and he chose to drop it. He now coaches an under 16s team.

I have carted boys, balls and coaches to and from matches, washed kit, helped organise fixtures, stood on touchlines in all weathers, sat in A and E, held hands while injuries were dressed and stitched, congratulated and consoled.

And now we support 3 football playing grandsons.

And then there is the family Fantasy Football League to contend with. wink

We're a Spurs household too, I'm not fanatical but do watch with OH when they are on tv. My son likewise is a Spurs fan my daughters house is an Arses oops Arsenal house so it's gets lively now and then grin.

Imperfect27 Sun 15-Oct-17 08:43:59

tanith it certainly makes for entertaining times here too - as long as Spurs win, of course ... grin

Well these days I find that I'm caught between the devil and the deep blue sea! Brought up by my football fanatical dad as a Magpie ( Newcastle united ) my little grandson is a season ticket holder for their arch enemies Sunderland. These days I find myself crossing my fingers for both sides and have even been dragged along to the Stadium of Light to watch grandson when he was Mascot , something that would have normally given me a panic attack! Oh dear.

Smithy Sun 15-Oct-17 09:43:04

Poor you GB - I suspect quite a few grandmas in this neck of the woods will be in that situation.
My lot about are all Newcastle fans except one strange step grandson who is a Man United follower. Takes all sorts!

Teetime Sun 15-Oct-17 09:58:44

imperfect I am so glad to hear that my DH is not alone in the world in his support of Tottenham Hotspurs!!! (The A word is not allowed in this house).smile

For myself I am an expert on all matters football and answer all question in quizzes relating to the game with Stanley Matthews. In other words I know nothing and don't see the appeal.
This morning we are dropping in to the UK Final of FootGolf at a ground which is owned by the charity where I am a Trustee.

Tottylimejuice Sun 15-Oct-17 10:01:50

My daughter is the football fanatic, boys would call for her, son thought they were calling for him, but no, he was rubbish at footy but she was great! She went on to play in a girls then womens team and was a qualified ref. We are the same as Grey Duster and all our household support 1 local team whilst I support the rival team, their team is rubbish lol

gillybob Sun 15-Oct-17 10:31:52

Oh Smithy my poor dad was gutted when DGS first announced that his uncle was taking him to watch Sunderland..... moving on a few years my DS and DGS are now season ticket holders shock

chelseababy Sun 15-Oct-17 10:41:08

My oh is a Spurs supporter and his dad Arsenal. You can guess my team!

gillybob Sun 15-Oct-17 11:05:42

Hmm scratching head chelseababy grin

aquagran Sun 15-Oct-17 11:18:09

We are Fulham season ticket holders. I wish I had married a man who supported a team that won a bit more often, but football loyalty is strong! Tense match on Saturday Nana3.

gillybob Sun 15-Oct-17 11:40:35

That's just glory hunting though aquagran and I can't see the point of supporting a team who simply buy their way to the top. wink

Sar53 Sun 15-Oct-17 12:45:51

I'm a Crystal Palace supporter as was my dad and two of my brothers. I used to be a season ticket holder. We had a great win over Chelsea yesterday. I'm very passionate about football. My OH supports Liverpool as he was brought up on the Wirral. We have watched some interesting games together. Neither my daughters or SIL's are the slightest bit interested in footbal.

aquagran Sun 15-Oct-17 13:10:48

gillybob I know, I know! Walking along the towpath after a defeat is like being in a Lowry painting! Yet, we remain loyal and faithful. Great win yesterday Sar53. Uncle Roy was a great manager for us, hope he will be for you too.

Deedaa Sun 15-Oct-17 14:37:41

We watch Italian football and are big AC Milan fans. None of the grandsons are interested in the game so we don't get dragged out in the cold to watch them grin

Cherrytree59 Sun 15-Oct-17 17:10:14

Just slinking in to say we are Rugby football fans.
DH Leicester Tigers
And Me The Glasgow Warriors.
Looking forward to taking my little DGS in the future.
They will love the pre match face painting and other such fun.

Tiger is always about at half time to wave and have photos with children.smile

H is a very keen Arsenal supporter as were his dad, uncle, and cousins. They all used to go to home matches regularly as the house H was born in is within walking distance of the old Highbury and now Emerates stadium.
S and D have been brought up to support them too. I've tagged along with my support but basically they play with the wrong shaped ball smile D and H both used to play rugby.

NannyKasey Sun 15-Oct-17 17:45:40

All Bristol City fans in our family across 3 (could be 4 soon) generations. My DS has had a season ticket since he was 5 (he's now 25 so in his 21st season as a season ticket holder). I started going again in 2005 (I went as a teenager in the 1970s). DGD no 1 has said 'Can I come to a Bristol City game with you and Uncle DS' her best friends daddy and most of the families at the school she attends support the 'other lot' so might have to keep that quiet (might take her to an FA Cup game if I can). DGD No 2 has a Bristol City teddy that I won at an event at the ground that is almost as big as her. I want to buy a new shirt but as we are on a decent run, I won't until the end of the run. grin My DPs, DB and DN also have season tickets.

Imperfect27 Sun 15-Oct-17 18:10:27

My DH loves rugby too and used to play as prop. He always claims a drop of Welsh blood when it is Six Nations time - I think he is more Viking than anything!!

Back to footy, just loving the fact that Spurs are in Champions League this time around ... and Arsenal are not! grin To be fair to myself - DH has 'lorded' it on this point over the past 8 years that I have known him!

gillybob Sun 15-Oct-17 19:09:42

Well I can breath a slight sigh of relief as both my dads team and my grandsons team drew this weekend . Not ideal I know but saves the battles between a 7 year old and an 80 year old !
