Casualty

I was a nurse, often overweight, mostly stressed, usually very tired, often had cancelled/non existent mealbreaks, changes of shift without notice, cancelled leave, study to do when off duty, own family to service, traffic to contend with, 2 sets of older, ill parents to nurse - because you're a nurse the rest of the family expect it, low pay, high mortgage interest, couldn't afford holidays or even days out.
Did I ever let my patients down- NO.
Did I eat the wrong things - YES.
Sorry but its not a job you can do on 1000 calories a day. Health professionals put their patients first not their own health.

When I go to orthopaedic OPD, there is a nurse there who is so fat that she has problems walking and I would think that her thighs are red raw with the rubbing of flesh. Not the best advert.

When my GP thought that my cholesterol was too high, he sent me to the practice nurse for a talk on diet. I was definitely not overweight.
I think that she muddled up the losing weight and the cholesterol diet and I couldn't say anything because she was soo fat and I was a bit shocked that she could lecture me about diet!
She was right about one thing when she asked me how I make gravy. I admitted to using the juices from the bottom of the roasting tin and she took a sharp intake of disapproving breath. It took me all my time not to laugh.

That is a very fattist OP. I can't see past the goodness in her nature.

She is lovely, isn't she? And for all we know the actress might have a medical problem. She doesn't exactly laze about during the programme, at any rate!

I am certainly not a fattist.I would think the same thing about a smoker or someone who drinks too much. It just seems a topical thing with the NHS saying they won't operate on obese people. I agree she IS a lovely person, and I'd much prefer a lovely fat person to care for me, than a horrid thin one, but all the same she is not a good role model health wise, and I feel,sorry for her. Believe me I have battled with weight all my adult life , through stressful jobs , bereavement and happy times.

When my husband was in hospital, there were more overweight nurses than thin ones, but they all did a brilliant job.

A friend and I both overweight once went together to see a pricy private Dietician, we both eat carefully but just seem to be stuck.
The woman was so overweight she had a special chair and could hardly move around her office.
Ok she could have had health issues but the big jar of sweets on the shelf behind her desk gave us food for thought.
She didn't tell us anything we didn't know and did not even read the medical histories or G.P.s' had put together.

I rarely watch Casualty these days as the stories seem to totally unrealistic.
However The story of Duffy and Charlie getting back together seems realistic.
This couple were always good friends and colleagues. Maybe they were always trying to be professional in keeping their feelings for each other out of work, but now without any partners of their own they have finally got it together and acknowledged how they feel about each other.
About time too but from what I have heard this is not an unusual situation for former very good friends to eventually catch up with each other and get together. I am surprised how chuffed I was at this story line, old cynic that I am.

'Duffy's' acting was so wooden though. I'm sure it didn't used to be.

I always think Charlie's acting's rather wooden as well. Perfect match, perhaps?

The outpatients at our local hospital is staffed by some lovely nurses but quite a few of them are hugely overweight. One, whom we know very well, is always complaining about the way her GP nags her about her weight, but it doesn't seem to encourage her to lose any.

Years ago my mother was seeing her GP for advice on dieting. Her GP was very overweight herself and just told my mother that it was impossible to lose weight successfully!

Been thinking of going cold turkey on Casualty for years, only watch because I am addicted. (Do they do counselling for that?). Something happened tonight though, it was actually good. Do they have a new producer? Whatever they have done it works. No, I know they can never turn Charlie into an actor but they have done the next best thing and given him a wooden wife. Glad Lilly seems ok, such a shame about Cal, just as he was becoming human too. So pleased Ethan is ok, what a sweet little chap he is.

The beautiful nurse who weighs you etc in the Heart Deoartment if my hospital, must be getting on for 20 stone, she has the prettiest face and slim legs, but is huge. She is always happy and very professional, putting patients at ease. Guess she like food as much her job but that is her decision, she more than noone knows the risks.
Casualty tonight was upsetting, my favourite actor getting stabbed. Think Duffy seems very wooden now.

I agree about Duffy & Charlie but Charlie has never really been any different so probably part of his appeal.

I think nurses like all groups have their faults and Robyn typifies that. Maybe a bit stereotypical in that she is warm, caring and happy despite being fat.

Charlie may be a bit wooden, but that`s part of his charm. Derek Thompson certainly wasn`t a wooden actor in the early 80s when he starred in Harry`s Game, a brilliant serial.
