A sensible, male, Chinese student of 27 living in Cambridge has said to me he's going to try hitch hiking to Ireland.
I was amazed. I can't remember when I last saw a hitch hiker on a roadside in the UK, certainly more than 10 years ago. I used to hitch hike all the time in the mid/late 60's but should I now advise this guy against it? Is it safe? Is there some insurance hassle now that wasn't there 50 yrs ago, especially for lorry drivers? He has NO money, so a railcard or a coach ticket (which is what I guess a lot of young people opt for) is not really an option.
