Likes and dislikes in clothing

My pet hates are halter-neck dresses and swimming cozzies.
Uncomfortable and unflattering!

Boat necklines. My bra straps are always showing...

What I would like is jeans made of real denim (not flimsy mixtures of goodness knows what) which go right up to what I laughingly refer to as my waist and have decently-sized pockets in which I can keep my keys without having to keep checking that they haven't fallen out. I used to get them from Lands End, but now they seem to do flimsier material and if you have a fitting at the waist you get pathetic little horizontal pockets which barely hold a hanky. I agree with you, overthehill about clothes which do not cover the bits one would rather have covered. You used to get T-shirts with short (not cap) sleeves and a neck which didn't expose more than your neck, but now you seem to have to have cap sleeves and a "female fit" which just shows every bulge, or buy a man's T-shirt with either boring colours or unsuitable slogans or both.

It would be a much duller world if we all liked the same things...

I love the short waisted stretch jeans as they have a bigger waist band that fits my flabby midriff much better than ordinary jeans and I don't get a muffin top anymore.
I also love halter-neck swimsuits as they tend to support my over ample bust much better than over the shoulder straps which show too much cleavage.

I love maxi dresses for Summer evenings.

No crop tops here either

Ana, I always fall for boat necklines because they look so elegant and then spend all my time trying to bet them to 'balance' on my bra straps. And, quite why I imagine anything would look elegant on me baffles me totally

I like simple lines. I sometimes look enviously at lovely frills and flounces that look great on other people but which just wouldn't work on me at all.

Agree about boat necklines – nice in theory but troublesome in practice – though I'm wearing a Lands End top now that has a boat neckline, but it also has three-quarter sleeves and is tunic length. I've solved the neckline problem by wearing an ordinary white T-shirt under it. It's still cold enough for several layers.

Wearing one of my mountain of black or white t-shirts under boat necks is my answer too Bags but elegant it's not!

I loathe Tshirts - the neck is too high and accentuates my chins....I go for something lower and V shaped which takes the eye down rather than up. I like Boden but these days they don't seem to cater for my age - maybe I have just got older? I too like jeans but with a bit of flexibility, i.e. elastane and yes, the pockets need to be deeper - I nearly lost my mobile phone down the loo recently . There are hardly any stylish dresses on the market with sleeves to cover the batwings unless they are made of crimplene and would fit your granny and I hate dresses which come with waist stringy things. I don't like to look like a sack of potatoes tied in the middle and always cut them off. When it comes to swimwear, I really think I should do a Nigella Lawson and wear a full length burkha outfit....
Basically, I would just prefer to be covered with fur, like an animal; it would solve the what to wear problem completely and I would only have to go to the Shampoo Parlour once a month for a trim

Few women look good in a classic T shirt do they. Just a very few, very young and fairly flat chested ones. Best kept for chaps and kids.
I hate high heels, puff sleeves and anything remotely frilly.

oth I agree re the tiebacks stringy things - too cutesy for our age group. I do sometimes often look at items longingly and think 'That was me xxx years ago'. I've had a moan on here before about all the low cut necklines, sometimes you just want a nice crew neck T-shirt.

Grannyknot I got a nice pale grey marl crew-neck t-shirt with short sleeves in M&S yesterday for £6. It's really nice quality.
They were actually 2 for £10, but the only other colours I liked were black, or white, and I already have enough of those.
What is it with M&S colours? They always seem completely naff

Cotton Traders have some t-shirts with elbow length sleeves, though they are beginning to run out of some colours and sizes. There are also some tunics with elbow length sleeves.

Anything frilly or girly is definitely out. In fact, looking at my wardrobe, it is remarkably masculine - jeans, grandad shirts etc. - but in feminine colours, my favourites being white and pink. But I have some lovely tunics (mainly gifts from my DDs).

I do not like collars or high necklines and go for boat necks in the main.

I am a strange yellow colour so white and pale shades are best for me or I look as if I am about to expire - especially in green! I wear white a lot, and every outfit has one white item.

And comfort is the keyword - anything uncomfortable is out. I do care about what I look like but I care more about being comfortable. Definitely no high heels, tight waists, tight garments of any kind, and no tights or stockings - aah bliss!

If I, being quite well endowed, even with a bit missing, wear a crew neck T shirt, the immediate effect is of a sort of shelf of bosom. Every charity I have worked with does crew neck T shirts...

A neat V neck (not too low) works much better. Have just ordered some from M&S, though, of course, the sleeves are too short.

I like simple, plain clothes, in deep colours, or black or white. I hate brown, and beige, and prints, think I look pregnant in tunics, and don't own a skirt. I am blonde, and small, and a little bit plump, and it would be too easy to look like a sofa!

Low rise jeans I suppose we called them hipsters in our day. They just expose layers of flesh which in my case are best left covered.

Anything beige coloured

Shoes that give my bunion gip.

T shirts or tops that are sold with a necklace yuk! I like to choose my own accessories.

Like

Vee neck T shirts and jumpers with 3/4 length sleeves.

Trousers that fit around the waistline and preferably with a side zip. Much more flattering if you have a large tummy and I do

Magic knickers (for the aforementioned tummy problem)

Scarves that divert attention from the large tummy.

Bright colours I may be getting on a bit but not ready to fade into the background yet.

Ve necks don't suit me.

With you on V-neck T shirts and jumpers with 3/4 sleeves Soop I love that look with Per Una jeans, but must have front zip. Also hate beige. Got my toes out today for the first time this year. Love painting my toenails.
But intrigued as to how do you wear a scarf so that it hides your tummy?

I always drape long pashmina type scarves to cover the back of my neck and hang loosely in front. I'm fairly short so they always cover the offending area. At the last count I had 175 scarves dating from 1975 to present day

Galen I was at the back of the queue when necks were handed out, mine is very (almost none existent) short so a Vee neckline gives the illusion that I have a neck.

I don't own anything that is flowery or horizontal stripe's most of my top's are plain quite a lot being black.
Never wear low rise waisted jeans prefer normal cut with zip rather than button's,but must confess some of my levi's are button's but I like the cut.
T-shirts have to be scoop or v neck as I can't wear anything around my throat even a scarf has to be draped very loosely.
I also wear legging a lot but make sure they are of good quality as nothing worse then them being stretched so they become see- through.

Bags, I'm sure you do indeed look elegant being lovely and slim. But, as my mum would happily tell you, I generally look like a sack of potatoes
