It's so depressing that we have to be constantly vigilant for scams. How do these people live with themselves?

Margs Wed 14-Oct-26 10:50:07

I've had a total avalanche of messages in recent weeks, under an assortment of names/labels, and the one thing they all have in common is the phrase "can't see the message? Just click on this link......."

Very corny!

Thanks for the warning.

Thank you , that is good to know.

Ask Rose. Has anyone tried this , its a repeated ad telling you that you might be due money from way back if you received family allowance. I'm now being tempted but they ask all your ID details is it a scam ? Surely DWP would automatically send us all a rebate or form or something ?

Those words are now in the algorithm in the ether.

tiredoldwoman Yes, the adverts offering rebates are usually a scam. Just ignore them. smile

I think we usually know when an e-mail is genuinely from an organisation we use, but if in doubt go to their official website or use their official phone number.

Just assume anything else or unexpected is a scam. Never click on anything, give out any information or follow any instructions.

Anything involving money is definitely a scam! 😬

Definitely sounds like a scam , DWP would write to you if this was genuine

I reply to telephone scam calls ' I hope your mother is proud of you'
It usually does the trick and they hang up!

Haven't had this particular one but had a real influx of others lately especially the TV licence one.

This could relate to the fact that receiving Child Benefit can count towards your National Insurance contributions if you were a stay at home parent, so affect your state pension. I’m guessing that might be what these ads refer to, though any queries should be taken up with HMRC ( not DWP)

The DWP does not appear to routinely write to everyone to tell them that their Child Benefit has earned them National Insurance credits. The government does provide information about this, but many people may not realise that the credits count towards their State Pension.
There is one important distinction: Child Benefit is administered by HMRC, not the DWP, although the credits help determine your State Pension.
If you were at home looking after your children and not working, you may have received these credits automatically if you claimed Child Benefit.

Thanks for this.

Re. The Ask Rose ads - I would have thought that if they were genuine Martin Lewis would be telling us about it as he’s usually pretty clued up and on the ball. I haven’t seen anything on his website about it.

Applegran Sun 18-Oct-26 16:48:12

Click on the email address it came from - not to reply but to see the real address hiding under the one shown. in a scam you see a strange email address, nothing like the real official one.

Mauduit24 Sun 18-Oct-26 18:55:39

Thank you for posting this . I had a problem with my hotmail account someone tried to control it. Following cyber advice I deleted the account. Thankfully I did have a back up account..
The cyber advice was if you don’t recognise a email address then forward it onto them

The way cheats and conmen have always lived. With an utter disregard for their victims, seeing them as rabbits to be skinned. But there is nothing new about them they have been with us since time begun. it is just the means of cnning keep up with the times.

Applegran. Don't click on the email address. just hover your
pointer over the address to show what it really is.

Tiredoldwoman check this information from the Martin Lewis website. It deals with family allowance also known as child benefit.

DONT click any links in an advert even if it’s an email you have been sent
