I'm pleased to hear that our government is putting sanctions on dealing with Israeli West Bank settlers. It's so outrageously unfair for Israel to encroach on the West Bank in this way.

Oreo Tue 08-Sept-26 11:50:53

I agree that the Israeli settlers should have been stopped before now, and that it is outrageous and unfair.
On the sanction am not so sure, Israeli produce isn’t always labelled ‘West Bank’ and the UK isn’t intentionally wanting to harm trade with Israel overall.
Also Palestinian West Bank trade could easily be harmed.
Also we do not want to anger Israel as we share terrorist intelligence.
I think this is really a sop to back bench MP’s who have been demanding it.

But it's just plain not right. It's the same as Russia and we're all in favour of fighting them.

AGAA4 Tue 08-Sept-26 12:13:17

Glad to hear this. I think it won't make much of a difference to their trade but is just telling Israel that we don't condone the atrocious behaviour of some Israelis on the West Bank.

Gesture politics?

Gesture politics?

Better than completely ignoring what is happening…

nanna8 Tue 08-Sept-26 12:22:34

I don’t suppose they will give a rat’s but at least it is a gesture.

Maremia Tue 08-Sept-26 13:09:51

If it was only 'gesture politics' would there be such debate about the proposals?

Fallingstar Tue 08-Sept-26 13:16:55

Am fully in favour of this, other countries have had sanctions issued against them for flouting international laws. Israel should not be any different.
Trump won’t be happy but then he has lost favour with most western governments so glad to see Burnham and Miliband taking this opportunity to show the government’s displeasure with illegal settlements.

POTUS will now increase tariffs on UK, which will increase domestic prices.

We will also loose some/all bilateral intelligence sharing. This will make UK security agencies at a greater disadvantage.

But hey ho Andy Burnham will increase his vote in the pro-Palestine community.

Casdon Tue 08-Sept-26 13:43:03

And amongst the rest of the thinking British public who are pro justice.

I haven,t bought anything from Israel for decades, there’s a code on produce to check and I only buy from Middle Eastern countries that have the right numbers on the packs .
I know my wee ban on olives or citrus fruits amd dates will make no difference to Israel but if we all stop buying their goods then it will get some attention and eventual results.
Other goods I don’t buy but these are repeat purchases weekly

Moral cowardice has allowed atrocities to go on for too long. Constantly bowing to Trump for fear of what he may do allows these people to carry on killing.

I am not in any community, but certainly don’t believe in turning a blind eye to gross injustices for which other countries have to suffer sanctions. If international law is to mean anything it should apply across the board not just to countries the US doesn’t like, with others being immune.
It does mean repercussions but are we to bow to a bully or stand firm.
Tbh Trump has already caused a hike in domestic prices due to the war in Iran. The man inflicts pain on the world whatever path leaders take. And even if Burnham backed down on this who is to say Trump won’t fall out with him over something else entirely and inflict higher prices on the UK.

I am not against these sanctions.

I am aware of the consequences of them.

AGAA4 Tue 08-Sept-26 14:17:40

I am sure the government are aware there may be consequences but I'm glad they stand up to bullies.
