It seems she was found in her home with serious injuries.

I did not share her political beliefs, especially in recent years, but she was a courageous woman prepared to stand up for what she believed in and plough her own furrow.

Obviously the police will investigate and we will gradually learn what happened.

I will mourn her death. We need more women in politics who are prepared to stand by their beliefs whether it makes them popular or not.

I never liked her or her views but at least she had the guts to say what she believed in and didn’t trim them to curry favour. This is an appalling act.

I thought it strange she died so soon after being on an interview a couple of days ago. Now police are looking for a white male suspect who is dangerous. All parties are united in their condemnation of her murder. Shocking crime.

What next really? Terribly sad.

DamaskRose Fri 10-Jul-26 17:25:01

Horrific. I hope they catch whoever did this, and soon.

What a dark turn of events.

Emeraldforest Fri 10-Jul-26 18:39:15

I didn't share her politics but she was a great character I couldn't help but have a soft spot for her. Good grief she was 78 just a year older than myself. What a shocking thing to do.

Grandma70s Fri 10-Jul-26 18:47:48

I’m shocked. Even though I didn’t agree with her attitudes, nobody should die like that. Just awful.

Bellasnana Fri 10-Jul-26 18:52:15

Someone has been arrested. What a dreadfully sad end. She must have been so frightened, poor lady. May she rest in peace.

rafichagran Fri 10-Jul-26 18:57:54

I just feel so very sad for her.

Elegran Fri 10-Jul-26 19:10:07

A cowardly attack. She was a feisty lady. so I hope she got some painful blows in on her attacker in return.

Sunshinegirls Fri 10-Jul-26 19:54:47

How awful what a wicked and dangerous world we live in.

I didn't agree with Ann's politics but she was true to herself and her beliefs, which I liked. I often watched her on the Jeremy Vine show on Channel 5 and she clearly enjoyed a good debate.

It is awful to think that she was apparently attacked in her own home, where she felt safe and happy.

As awful as her death is, it’s important to remember that homicide figures are actually decreasing. Each one is truly dreadful of course but as far as homicide is concerned, the UK is less dangerous and wicked than it has been

But not for people in the news, they are, I think, more at risk than they used to be. The murders of MPs, Jo Cox and David Amess show us that anyone in the news for their politics is at risk.

Anne Widdecombe was principled and outspoken. I hope that is not the reason was murdered.

Tuliptree Fri 10-Jul-26 21:21:09

Well, we’ll eventually find out the motivation I expect.

Oreo Fri 10-Jul-26 21:26:05

It’s usually money.

MayBee70 Fri 10-Jul-26 21:26:17

Stephen Timms was stabbed while doing one of his surgeries but thankfully survived. I only remembered about it when he appeared on tv the other day.

Sarnia Fri 10-Jul-26 21:57:58

Irrespective of peoples opinions, she did not deserve to have her life taken in such a cruel way.

25Avalon Fri 10-Jul-26 22:13:44

Some people are cheering. What a horrible country we have become.

Fallingstar Fri 10-Jul-26 22:29:29

I think it has already been revealed that the murder was neither terrorism nor politically motivated so I doubt it is because Anne was outspoken about her political beliefs.
I agree with Oreo, I think it could be down to the root of all evil - money.

I hope this isn’t true. Murdering an older woman living alone regardless of her opinions is a heinous crime and I just hope Anne’s family get justice for her murder.

I’d like to think that as well but sadly, according to Jeremy Vine this morning, she was actually quite frail.

Ann was on our World cruise a few years ago and gave 3 or 4 very interesting talks.

Her first one had a large audience, the second a full house and by the 4 , it was standing room only. So entertaining, funny and engaging. we had the opportunity to speak to her briefly a few times and she was chatty and pleasant.

RIP . and I pray the person who did this terrible crime is found and punished.

tabbie Fri 10-Jul-26 23:24:03

Why would someone from ten miles away go and murder her? That isn't a random act.
