Populism in decline?

Well, maybe for now in Poland anyway.

The big populist Trump is still waiting in the wings though.

The news from Poland is certainly the brightest bit of news at the moment, and boy, do we need it!

The Washington Post ( not Trumps best friend) forecast a win for him.
I’m going to have a bet. I won a nice amount last time.

Probably Trump has better genes than Biden as far as ageing is concerned but it would be a calamity if Trump were to be elected.

Far right can mean different things in different countries. I would be surprised if NZ’s far right is what people normally think of as pretty hateful elsewhere.

I d be interested to know what far right means in NZ then Nana8 after the awful decision in aussieland with the recent Aboriginal disappointment

The Australian decision may not have been a far right one, I think it was more complicated than that.

Of course it was, Oreo. No one wants to oppress First Nations people but there was a lot of mistrust of the government’s motives and it was more of a vote against them than what it is made out to be. Interesting that, despite what they said, many First Nations people actually were strongly opposed to it. I’m talking about the ones who live outside the cities, not the loud politically minded ones who tend to control the vast amounts of money donated ( which never reaches those who most need it )

It’s interesting that people cry far right whenever there’s any move to the right. The right is not far right, it is simply right rather than left. I remember the EDF (English Defence League, have I got the name right?) Those people paraded through the streets aggressively chanting racist slurs. That’s far right, not the election of a right wing party rather than a left wing party in New Zealand.

Being a New Zealander our new government is centre right, though our left wing media are pretty unhappy.
I have noticed that according to the mainsteam media far right these days seems to be anyone with conservative or even capitalist values.

It has become ridiculous, most of us are sick to death of it. It has got to the state where people embrace ‘the right’ because the ‘left’ are so disgustingly judgemental. Many with traditionally left wing views dislike our left wing silly government but there is no alternative here, sadly. Good for the New Zealanders, they are a sensible lot.

I suspect that all those tory governments of the 1950s & 60s would be considered to be left wing now.. building council housing, funding the NHS.. 😱

Depends what you mean by 'populism'. Pride in one's country is vital to prevent us being overtaken by foreign dictatorships. Hence the vote to leave the EU. Nothing to do with being a Nazi, which so many people seem to equate with national pride.

The EU is not a foreign dictatorship and leaving it was a catastrophic mistake which it will take decades to remedy.

I certainly wasn’t implying that Trump would be preferable! I can’t even begin to say how much I loathe and despise him. I’m just thinking ahead over the next 5/6 years and feeling that Biden is not physically up to another 6 years.

I agree with you Maybee. I too find it difficult to believe that the Americans can’t find a younger and fitter person to be the Democrat candidate. Nor do I understand why Biden wants to serve another term at his age.
Like you I am fearful of Trump becoming president again.
