It still exists.

I think I've found an improvement not (yet) cancelled by the Tories.

The 5p charge (on plastic bags) was introduced in supermarkets in 2015 and since then usage at the main retailers has dropped by a staggering 97%. Meanwhile, over £200 million has been voluntarily donated by retailers to good causes in that time.

As a result of the charge, the average person in England now buys around three single-use carrier bags a year from the main supermarkets, compared with around 140 in 2014.

The charge was last year increased to 10p and extended to all businesses. This has helped further bring the number of bags used down by over 20% from 627 million in 2019/20 to 496 million in 2021/22.

Wales has gained confidence in itself, there’s been a noticeable increase in national pride and ownership, against the odds.

We introduced the supermarket bags charge in 2011 by the way!

I do approve of bag charges but when I shop for my food bank donation I always buy carrier bags because the food bank dispenses the food in them. For my own shopping, even clothes etc I always supply my own bags. I wonder if people are inwardly shaking their heads when I buy them two or 3 at a time, even as I fill just one.

It seems (unsurprisingly) that this government has not thought the stopping of them through.

How has that improved life in the UK?

Oh Bodach please tell me how leaving the EU has been an improvement.

We have got less plastic bags, we are doing more recycling and our council is collecting our food waste and using it to generate power. Whether things like this will survive the Rees Mogg creature's dumping of all the EU laws remains to be seen.

The Conservative Party when May was leader stopped liaising with Jamie Oliver regarding good nutrition for school meals. From what I read he was pretty upset about it.

Perhaps we ought to think what improved in the decade previous to the one we are looking at.

I think there would be a much, much bigger list of stuff that impacted on peoples lives to a much greater extent.

Improving broadband times and access

Free travel for children up to 22 in Scotland sits well with me.

Some of the above eg improvements in cancer treatment, Covid vaccination, plastic bag legislation, upskirting legislation, etc have only occurred during the Tory tenure - not been driven by them.

Medical advances; scientists
Plastic bags; environmental campaigners
Upskirting; Labour’s Jess Phillips

…and so on.

It’s all the legislation blocked by Tory-crony groups, all the laws that didn’t get passed, all the EU laws Rees-Moggy want to scrap that you should worry about.

It's a pathetically inadequate record for a party that's been in power for 13 years, isn't it?
